"In the Treta Yuga dharma diminishes by one quarter, Achyuta becomes red, and people act in truth and devote themselves to the dharma of ritual. Then sacrifices begin, along with various dharmas and rites; in Treta arise intentions, actions, gifts and fruits. People devoted to austerity and gifts do not depart from dharma; in the Treta Yuga they stand in their own dharma and perform their deeds. In the Dvapara Yuga dharma operates already lacking two parts; Vishnu becomes yellow, and the Veda is divided into four. Then some become knowers of four Vedas, others of three, others of two, others of one, and others are wholly without the Rik. When the shastras are thus divided, ritual is carried out in a multitude of ways, and the people, devoted to austerity and gifts, become rajasic. From ignorance of the single Veda these Vedas were made many; and from the decline of truth, only some remain established in truth. Those who fall away from truth acquire a multitude of diseases, and desires and calamities arise as well, brought about by divine powers. Sorely afflicted by these, people perform austerities; those who desire pleasures and those who desire heaven extend their sacrifices. Thus, having reached Dvapara, beings diminish through unrighteousness. In the Kali Yuga, Kaunteya, dharma stands on a single foot. Having reached the dark yuga, Keshava becomes black; Vedic customs fall silent, and so do dharma, sacrifice and rites. Calamities, diseases, laziness, faults, anger and the like arise, along with anxieties and afflictions. As the yugas revolve, dharma changes again; as dharma changes, the world changes again. When the world is exhausted, the conditions that set it in motion perish; the dharmas arising from the end of the yuga distort men's aspirations. This is called the Kali Yuga, which will soon begin. The long-lived follow this cycle of the yugas. And as for your curiosity to know more of me, subduer of foes -- what use is there for one who already understands in what is fruitless? I have told you all you asked me, mighty-armed one: the number of the yugas. Be well; go."

Hanuman's teaching is not gloomy but sober: as truth wanes, external complexity and inner disquiet both grow. This is why in Kali humility, remembrance of the Lord, and exact fidelity to one's own dharma matter most of all.
