भीम उवाच
पूर्वरूपम् अदृष्ट्वा ते न यास्यामि कथं चन ॥
यदि ते ऽहम् अनुग्राह्यो दर्शयात्मानम् आत्मना ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
एवम् उक्तस् तु भीमेन स्मितं कृत्वा प्लवंगमः ॥
तद् रूपं दर्शयाम् आस यद् वै सागरलङ्घने ॥
भ्रातुः प्रियम् अभीप्सन् वै चकार सुमहद् वपुः ॥
देहस् तस्य ततो ऽतीव वर्धत्य् आयामविस्तरैः ॥
तद् रूपं कदलीषण्डं छादयन्न् अमितद्युतिः ॥
गिरेश् चोच्छ्रयम् आगम्य तस्थौ तत्र स वानरः ॥
समुच्छ्रितमहाकायो द्वितीय इव पर्वतः ॥
ताम्रेक्षणस् तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रो भृकुटीकृतलोचनः ॥
दीर्घलाङ्गूलम् आविध्य दिशो व्याप्य स्थितः कपिः ॥
तद् रूपं महद् आलक्ष्य भ्रातुः कौरवनन्दनः ॥
विसिस्मिये तदा भीमो जहृषे च पुनः पुनः ॥
तम् अर्कम् इव तेजोभिः सौवर्णम् इव पर्वतम् ॥
प्रदीप्तम् इव चाकाशं दृष्ट्वा भीमो न्यमीलयत् ॥
आबभाषे च हनुमान् भीमसेनं स्मयन्न् इव ॥
एतावद् इह शक्तस् त्वं रूपं द्रष्टुं ममानघ ॥
वर्धे ऽहं चाप्य् अतो भूयो यावन् मे मनसेप्सितम् ॥
भीम शत्रुषु चात्यर्थं वर्धते मूर्तिर् ओजसा ॥
तद् अद्भुतं महारौद्रं विन्ध्यमन्दरसंनिभम् ॥
दृष्ट्वा हनूमतो वर्ष्म संभ्रान्तः पवनात्मजः ॥
प्रत्युवाच ततो भीमः संप्रहृष्टतनूरुहः ॥
कृताञ्जलिर् अदीनात्मा हनूमन्तम् अवस्थितम् ॥
दृष्टं प्रमाणं विपुलं शरीरस्यास्य ते विभो ॥
संहरस्व महावीर्य स्वयम् आत्मानम् आत्मना ॥
न हि शक्नोमि त्वां द्रष्टुं दिवाकरम् इवोदितम् ॥
अप्रमेयम् अनाधृष्यं मैनाकम् इव पर्वतम् ॥
विस्मयश् चैव मे वीर सुमहान् मनसो ऽद्य वै ॥
यद् रामस् त्वयि पार्श्वस्थे स्वयं रावणम् अभ्यगात् ॥
त्वम् एव शक्तस् तां लङ्कां सयोधां सहवाहनाम् ॥
स्वबाहुबलम् आश्रित्य विनाशयितुम् ओजसा ॥
न हि ते किं चिद् अप्राप्यं मारुतात्मज विद्यते ॥
तव नैकस्य पर्याप्तो रावणः सगणो युधि ॥
एवम् उक्तस् तु भीमेन हनूमान् प्लवगर्षभः ॥
प्रत्युवाच ततो वाक्यं स्निग्धगम्भीरया गिरा ॥

evam uktas tu bhīmena smitaṃ kṛtvā plavaṃgamaḥ ||
tad rūpaṃ darśayām āsa yad vai sāgaralaṅghane ||
bhrātuḥ priyam abhīpsan vai cakāra sumahad vapuḥ ||
dehas tasya tato 'tīva vardhaty āyāmavistaraiḥ ||
tad rūpaṃ kadalīṣaṇḍaṃ chādayann amitadyutiḥ ||
gireś cocchrayam āgamya tasthau tatra sa vānaraḥ ||
samucchritamahākāyo dvitīya iva parvataḥ ||
tāmrekṣaṇas tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭro bhṛkuṭīkṛtalocanaḥ ||
dīrghalāṅgūlam āvidhya diśo vyāpya sthitaḥ kapiḥ ||
tad rūpaṃ mahad ālakṣya bhrātuḥ kauravanandanaḥ ||
visismiye tadā bhīmo jahṛṣe ca punaḥ punaḥ ||
tam arkam iva tejobhiḥ sauvarṇam iva parvatam ||
pradīptam iva cākāśaṃ dṛṣṭvā bhīmo nyamīlayat ||
ābabhāṣe ca hanumān bhīmasenaṃ smayann iva ||
etāvad iha śaktas tvaṃ rūpaṃ draṣṭuṃ mamānagha ||
vardhe 'haṃ cāpy ato bhūyo yāvan me manasepsitam ||
bhīma śatruṣu cātyarthaṃ vardhate mūrtir ojasā ||
tad adbhutaṃ mahāraudraṃ vindhyamandarasaṃnibham ||
dṛṣṭvā hanūmato varṣma saṃbhrāntaḥ pavanātmajaḥ ||
pratyuvāca tato bhīmaḥ saṃprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ ||
kṛtāñjalir adīnātmā hanūmantam avasthitam ||
dṛṣṭaṃ pramāṇaṃ vipulaṃ śarīrasyāsya te vibho ||
saṃharasva mahāvīrya svayam ātmānam ātmanā ||
na hi śaknomi tvāṃ draṣṭuṃ divākaram ivoditam ||
aprameyam anādhṛṣyaṃ mainākam iva parvatam ||
vismayaś caiva me vīra sumahān manaso 'dya vai ||
yad rāmas tvayi pārśvasthe svayaṃ rāvaṇam abhyagāt ||
tvam eva śaktas tāṃ laṅkāṃ sayodhāṃ sahavāhanām ||
svabāhubalam āśritya vināśayitum ojasā ||
na hi te kiṃ cid aprāpyaṃ mārutātmaja vidyate ||
tava naikasya paryāpto rāvaṇaḥ sagaṇo yudhi ||
evam uktas tu bhīmena hanūmān plavagarṣabhaḥ ||
pratyuvāca tato vākyaṃ snigdhagambhīrayā girā ||
Bhima said: 'Until I have seen your former form, I will not go anywhere. If I am worthy of your grace, show me yourself as you are.' Vaishampayana said: 'So spoke Bhima, and, smiling, the leaping monkey showed the form he had assumed when crossing the ocean. Wishing to please his brother, he created an enormous body; his body began to grow tremendously in length and breadth. Blazing with boundless splendor, covering the banana grove with this form and reaching the height of a mountain, the monkey stood there. With his huge body raised, like a second mountain, with copper-colored eyes, sharp fangs, a frowning gaze, and a long tail sweeping across the directions, this kapi stood. Seeing the great form of his brother, Bhima, the joy of the Kaurava line, was astonished and rejoiced again and again. Seeing him blazing like the sun, like a golden mountain, like a flaming sky, Bhima closed his eyes. Hanuman, as if smiling, said to Bhimasena: "Sinless one, this is the form of mine you are able to see here. But I can grow still larger, as much as my mind desires; among enemies, Bhima, my form grows especially through its power." Seeing the wondrous, most terrible body of Hanuman, like the Vindhya and Mandara mountains, the son of the Wind was overwhelmed. Then Bhima, his hair standing on end with joy, with joined palms and an undaunted heart, answered Hanuman as he stood there: "Lord, I have seen the vast measure of this body of yours. Withdraw it, O mighty one, by yourself. I cannot look at you as at the rising sun, immeasurable, unassailable, like the mountain Mainaka. Today, hero, there is great wonder in my mind: why did Rama himself go against Ravana when you were beside him? You alone, relying on the strength of your arms, were able by your might to destroy that Lanka together with its warriors and chariots. For you, son of Maruta, nothing is unattainable; Ravana with his followers was not enough for you alone in battle." Thus addressed by Bhima, Hanuman, bull among the leaping ones, replied with a deep and gentle voice: "It is so, mighty-armed one, just as you say, O Bharata. Bhimasena, this base rakshasa was not a match for me. But if I had killed this Ravana, the thorn of the world, the glory of Raghava would have perished; therefore I left it undone. That hero, having slain the lord of the rakshasas together with his army, brought Sita to his own city and established his glory in the world."'
