ये स्म ते नाद्रियन्ते ऽऽज्ञा नोद्विजन्ते कदा च न ॥
पश्यामस् ताञ् श्रिया हीनान् पाण्डवान् वनवासिनः ॥
श्रूयन्ते हि महाराज सरो द्वैतवनं प्रति ॥
वसन्तः पाण्डवाः सार्धं ब्राह्मणैर् वनवासिभिः ॥
स प्रयाहि महाराज श्रिया परमया युतः ॥
प्रतपन् पाण्डुपुत्रांस् त्वं रश्मिवान् इव तेजसा ॥
स्थितो राज्ये च्युतान् राज्याच् छ्रिया हीनाञ् श्रिया वृतः ॥
असमृद्धान् समृद्धार्थः पश्य पाण्डुसुतान् नृप ॥
महाभिजनसंपन्नं भद्रे महति संस्थितम् ॥
पाण्डवास् त्वाभिवीक्षन्तां ययातिम् इव नाहुषम् ॥
यां श्रियं सुहृदश् चैव दुर्हृदश् च विशां पते ॥
पश्यन्ति पुरुषे दीप्तां सा समर्था भवत्य् उत ॥
समस्थो विषमस्थान् हि दुर्हृदो यो ऽभिवीक्षते ॥
जगतीस्थान् इवाद्रिस्थः किं ततः परमं सुखम् ॥
न पुत्रधनलाभेन न राज्येनापि विन्दति ॥
प्रीतिं नृपतिशार्दूल याम् अमित्राघदर्शनात् ॥
किं नु तस्य सुखं न स्याद् आश्रमे यो धनंजयम् ॥
अभिवीक्षेत सिद्धार्थो वल्कलाजिनवाससम् ॥
सुवाससो हि ते भार्या वल्कलाजिनवाससम् ॥
पश्यन्त्व् असुखितां कृष्णां सा च निर्विद्यतां पुनः ॥
विनिन्दतां तथात्मानं जीवितं च धनच्युता ॥
न तथा हि सभामध्ये तस्या भवितुम् अर्हति ॥
वैमनस्यं यथा दृष्ट्वा तव भार्याः स्वलंकृताः ॥
एवम् उक्त्वा तु राजानं कर्णः शकुनिना सह ॥
तूष्णीं बभूवतुर् उभौ वाक्यान्ते जनमेजय ॥

jagatīsthān ivādristhaḥ kiṃ tataḥ paramaṃ sukham ||
na putradhanalābhena na rājyenāpi vindati ||
prītiṃ nṛpatiśārdūla yām amitrāghadarśanāt ||
kiṃ nu tasya sukhaṃ na syād āśrame yo dhanaṃjayam ||
abhivīkṣeta siddhārtho valkalājinavāsasam ||
suvāsaso hi te bhāryā valkalājinavāsasam ||
paśyantv asukhitāṃ kṛṣṇāṃ sā ca nirvidyatāṃ punaḥ ||
vinindatāṃ tathātmānaṃ jīvitaṃ ca dhanacyutā ||
na tathā hi sabhāmadhye tasyā bhavitum arhati ||

译文

'Those who once did not respect you and never feared you are now, as we hear, bereft of Shri: the Pandavas dwell in the forest by Lake Dvaitavana together with forest-dwelling brahmins. Therefore go, great king, arrayed in supreme splendor, and scorch the sons of Pandu with your radiance, like the sun with its rays. Standing in your kingdom, look, O king, upon the sons of Pandu bereft of kingdom; surrounded by Shri, look upon those bereft of Shri; having attained wealth, look upon those bereft of success. Let the Pandavas look upon you, of noble birth, standing in great fortune, as upon Yayati, son of Nahusha. What greater joy can there be than for one standing firm to see his foes in an unstable position, as one on a mountain sees those standing on the plain below? Neither the gain of sons and wealth, nor even a kingdom, O tiger among kings, gives a lord such joy as the sight of an enemy's misfortune. What happiness would not be his who, his purpose accomplished, should see Dhananjaya in the hermitage clad in bark and hide? Let your wives, dressed in beautiful garments, see unhappy Krishna clad in bark and hide; let her once more despise herself and reproach her life, having lost her wealth. In the assembly hall she could not have felt such dejection as she will feel on seeing your bedecked wives.' Having said this to the king, Karna together with Shakuni fell silent, O Janamejaya.

注释

Karna's counsel openly delights in another's pain. Here adharma appears not as an error but as a taste for humiliation.
