Janamejaya said: "Having freed Duryodhana, what did the mighty sons of Pandu do in that forest? Tell me this." Vaishampayana said: "Then at night in Dvaitavana, animals appeared in a dream to Kunti's son Yudhishthira as he lay sleeping, trembling, with palms folded, tears choking their throats. The king of kings said to them: 'Speak what you wish to say. Who are you, and what do you desire?' Then the animals who had survived the slaughter answered the illustrious son of Kunti: 'We are the animals of Dvaitavana, O Bharata, the survivors of the slaughter. Great king, let us not perish: change your dwelling place. You, brave brothers, all masters of weapons, have all but destroyed the families of the forest-dwellers. Some of us remain as seed-stock; O great in wisdom, let us grow by your grace, King Yudhishthira.' Seeing these trembling, frightened animals, reduced to a mere remnant of seed-stock, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira was deeply grieved and said to them: 'So be it. You speak the truth, and I shall do this.' Waking at the end of the night, the best of kings, filled with compassion for the animals, said to his assembled brothers: 'In the night, in a dream, I was entreated by the animals who survived the slaughter: "We have become few, blessings upon you, show us mercy." They speak the truth. We must show mercy to the forest-dwellers, for we have already been living off them for a year and eight months. There is again Kamyaka, rich in game and beautiful, the finest forest, known as the head of the desert land by Lake Trinabindu. There, dwelling and roaming, we shall take our pleasure together with what settlements remain.' Then the Pandavas, versed in dharma, set out quickly together with the brahmins who had been living there with them, and the servants led by Indrasena followed after them. Having traveled roads furnished with good food and pure water, they beheld the holy Kamyaka, a hermitage full of ascetics. Then the Kauravas, surrounded by the finest brahmins, entered that forest, O best of the Bharatas, as the virtuous enter heaven."

Yudhishthira hears even the voice of animals. Royal dharma here extends beyond the human sphere: compassion for living beings becomes the cause of his action.
