तम् उवाच ततः प्रीतः स मुनिर् मुद्गलं तदा ॥
त्वत्समो नास्ति लोके ऽस्मिन् दाता मात्सर्यवर्जितः ॥
क्षुद् धर्मसंज्ञां प्रणुदत्य् आदत्ते धैर्यम् एव च ॥
विषयानुसारिणी जिह्वा कर्षत्य् एव रसान् प्रति ॥
आहारप्रभवाः प्राणा मनो दुर्निग्रहं चलम् ॥
मनसश् चेन्द्रियाणां चाप्य् ऐकाग्र्यं निश्चितं तपः ॥
श्रमेणोपार्जितं त्यक्तुं दुःखं शुद्धेन चेतसा ॥
तत् सर्वं भवता साधो यथावद् उपपादितम् ॥
प्रीताः स्मो ऽनुगृहीताश् च समेत्य भवता सह ॥
इन्द्रियाभिजयो धैर्यं संविभागो दमः शमः ॥
दया सत्यं च धर्मश् च त्वयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥
जितास् ते कर्मभिर् लोकाः प्राप्तो ऽसि परमां गतिम् ॥
अहो दानं विघुष्टं ते सुमहत् स्वर्गवासिभिः ॥
सशरीरो भवान् गन्ता स्वर्गं सुचरितव्रत ॥
इत्य् एवं वदतस् तस्य तदा दुर्वाससो मुनेः ॥
देवदूतो विमानेन मुद्गलं प्रत्युपस्थितः ॥
हंससारसयुक्तेन किङ्किणीजालमालिना ॥
कामगेन विचित्रेण दिव्यगन्धवता तथा ॥
उवाच चैनं विप्रर्षिं विमानं कर्मभिर् जितम् ॥
समुपारोह संसिद्धिं प्राप्तो ऽसि परमां मुने ॥
तम् एवंवादिनम् ऋषिर् देवदूतम् उवाच ह ॥
इच्छामि भवता प्रोक्तान् गुणान् स्वर्गनिवासिनाम् ॥
के गुणास् तत्र वसतां किं तपः कश् च निश्चयः ॥
स्वर्गे स्वर्गसुखं किं च दोषो वा देवदूतक ॥
सतां सप्तपदं मित्रम् आहुः सन्तः कुलोचिताः ॥
मित्रतां च पुरस्कृत्य पृच्छामि त्वाम् अहं विभो ॥
यद् अत्र तथ्यं पथ्यं च तद् ब्रवीह्य् अविचारयन् ॥
श्रुत्वा तथा करिष्यामि व्यवसायं गिरा तव ॥

śrameṇopārjitaṃ tyaktuṃ duḥkhaṃ śuddhena cetasā ||
tat sarvaṃ bhavatā sādho yathāvad upapāditam ||
prītāḥ smo 'nugṛhītāś ca sametya bhavatā saha ||
indriyābhijayo dhairyaṃ saṃvibhāgo damaḥ śamaḥ ||
dayā satyaṃ ca dharmaś ca tvayi sarvaṃ pratiṣṭhitam ||
jitās te karmabhir lokāḥ prāpto 'si paramāṃ gatim ||
aho dānaṃ vighuṣṭaṃ te sumahat svargavāsibhiḥ ||
saśarīro bhavān gantā svargaṃ sucaritavrata ||
ity evaṃ vadatas tasya tadā durvāsaso muneḥ ||
devadūto vimānena mudgalaṃ pratyupasthitaḥ ||
haṃsasārasayuktena kiṅkiṇījālamālinā ||
kāmagena vicitreṇa divyagandhavatā tathā ||
uvāca cainaṃ viprarṣiṃ vimānaṃ karmabhir jitam ||
samupāroha saṃsiddhiṃ prāpto 'si paramāṃ mune ||
tam evaṃvādinam ṛṣir devadūtam uvāca ha ||
icchāmi bhavatā proktān guṇān svarganivāsinām ||
ke guṇās tatra vasatāṃ kiṃ tapaḥ kaś ca niścayaḥ ||
svarge svargasukhaṃ kiṃ ca doṣo vā devadūtaka ||
satāṃ saptapadaṃ mitram āhuḥ santaḥ kulocitāḥ ||
mitratāṃ ca puraskṛtya pṛcchāmi tvām ahaṃ vibho ||
yad atra tathyaṃ pathyaṃ ca tad bravīhy avicārayan ||
śrutvā tathā kariṣyāmi vyavasāyaṃ girā tava ||
Then the pleased sage said to Mudgala: 'There is no giver in this world equal to you, free from miserliness. Hunger drives out the very notion of dharma and takes away steadfastness. The tongue, chasing after its objects, is drawn toward tastes. Lives spring from food; the mind is hard to master and restless. To concentrate the mind and the senses — this alone is true austerity. To give up, with a pure heart, what has been won by hard labor — this is difficult. All this, O good one, you have accomplished as it should be done. We are pleased and blessed by this meeting with you. Mastery over the senses, steadfastness, the sharing of goods, restraint, tranquility, compassion, truth, and dharma — all are established in you. The worlds have been conquered by your deeds; you have attained the highest goal. Ah, your gift has been proclaimed as very great by the dwellers of heaven. You, who have kept a noble vow, shall go to heaven in this very body.' While the sage Durvasas was speaking thus, a divine messenger came to Mudgala on a celestial chariot, yoked with geese and cranes, adorned with a net of little bells, moving at will, richly wrought and fragrant with heavenly scent. He said to that brahmin-seer: 'This chariot has been won by your deeds. Ascend, sage; you have attained the highest perfection.' To him who spoke thus, the seer Mudgala said to the divine messenger: 'I wish to hear from you of the qualities of the dwellers of heaven. What virtues do those who live there possess? What austerity, what resolve do they hold? What is the happiness of heaven, and is there any flaw in it, O divine messenger? The good, true to their lineage, say that friendship among the virtuous is sealed in seven steps. Placing that friendship first, I ask you, mighty one. Tell me, without deliberation, what is true and beneficial here. Having heard it, I will decide my course according to your word.'

Mudgala is in no hurry even toward a heavenly reward. His question shows maturity: one should desire not the brilliance of the fruit, but the truth about its limit.
