Yudhishthira said: 'How was a drona of rice given away by that great soul? To whom was it given, blessed one, and by what rule? Tell me. I consider fruitful the birth of one who follows the good dharma and whose deeds please the blessed Dharma himself, visible to the eye.' Vyasa said: 'In Kurukshetra, O king, there lived Mudgala, a soul devoted to dharma, firm in his vow, truthful and free from envy. He lived on grains gleaned after the harvest, kept the vow of hospitality, performed rites, and followed the way of the pigeon (kapoti vritti). This great ascetic, a sage with sons and wife, ate only once a fortnight; over a fortnight, living like a pigeon, he gathered a drona of rice. Performing the darsha and paurnamasa rites, free from envy, he sustained his body on what remained after the gods and guests had been served. Indra himself, lord of the three worlds, together with the gods, accepted his share at every festival, great king. Having performed the festival rite, preserving the sage's way of life, he gave food to guests with a joyful heart. On the day when that great soul gave away food from his drona of rice, the remainder — for he was free of miserliness — only grew at the sight of guests. Hundreds of wise brahmins ate that food, for through the purity of the sage's giving it kept increasing.'

Mudgala lives with almost no possessions, yet his house is never emptied by giving. Purity of heart turns the little into a vessel of abundance.
