At that time the king of the Sindhus, the illustrious son of Vriddhakshatra, Jayadratha, desiring marriage with a woman of Shalva, was journeying there. Surrounded by a great royal retinue and many kings, he approached Kamyaka. There he saw the beloved wife of the Pandavas, the illustrious Draupadi, standing at the door of the hermitage in the lonely forest. She shone in body, bearing supreme beauty, and lit up that part of the forest as lightning lights a dark cloud. All, joining their palms, gazed upon the blameless one and thought: 'Is this an apsara? A daughter of the gods? Or an illusion wrought by the gods?' Then the king of the Sindhus, the son of Vriddhakshatra, Jayadratha, seeing this woman of flawless limbs, was astonished, and his heart rejoiced. Overcome by desire, he said to King Kotikashya: 'Whose is this flawless one? Or is she perhaps not human at all? Having seen this woman of surpassing beauty, I have no more need of any other marriage. I shall take her for myself and carry her to my own home. Go, gentle one, learn about her -- whose she is, where she is from, and why this fair-browed woman has come into this thorny forest. Perhaps this finest of women, this beauty of the world, with long corners to her eyes, lovely teeth, and a slender waist, will choose me today. Perhaps I shall have my desire fulfilled, winning this excellent woman. Go, Kotika, find out who is her protector.' Hearing this, Kotikashya, wearing his earrings, leapt down from the chariot and approached to question her -- like a jackal approaching a tigress.

The comparison to a jackal and a tigress already passes judgment on Jayadratha's intent. He sees beauty, but does not see the sanctity of another man's wife or of the hermitage.
