राजोवाच
एवम् एतत् त्वया भद्रे कर्तव्यम् अविशङ्कया ॥
मद्धितार्थं कुलार्थं च तथात्मार्थं च नन्दिनि ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
एवम् उक्त्वा तु तां कन्यां कुन्तिभोजो महायशाः ॥
पृथां परिददौ तस्मै द्विजाय सुतवत्सलः ॥
इयं ब्रह्मन् मम सुता बाला सुखविवर्धिता ॥
अपराध्येत यत् किं चिन् न तत् कार्यं हृदि त्वया ॥
द्विजातयो महाभागा वृद्धबालतपस्विषु ॥
भवन्त्य् अक्रोधनाः प्रायो विरुद्धेष्व् अपि नित्यदा ॥
सुमहत्य् अपराधे ऽपि क्षान्तिः कार्या द्विजातिभिः ॥
यथाशक्ति यथोत्साहं पूजा ग्राह्या द्विजोत्तम ॥
तथेति ब्राह्मणेनोक्ते स राजा प्रीतमानसः ॥
हंसचन्द्रांशुसंकाशं गृहम् अस्य न्यवेदयत् ॥
तत्राग्निशरणे कॢप्तम् आसनं तस्य भानुमत् ॥
आहारादि च सर्वं तत् तथैव प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥
निक्षिप्य राजपुत्री तु तन्द्रीं मानं तथैव च ॥
आतस्थे परमं यत्नं ब्राह्मणस्याभिराधने ॥
तत्र सा ब्राह्मणं गत्वा पृथा शौचपरा सती ॥
विधिवत् परिचारार्हं देववत् पर्यतोषयत् ॥

evam uktvā tu tāṃ kanyāṃ kuntibhojo mahāyaśāḥ ||
pṛthāṃ paridadau tasmai dvijāya sutavatsalaḥ ||
iyaṃ brahman mama sutā bālā sukhavivardhitā ||
aparādhyeta yat kiṃ cin na tat kāryaṃ hṛdi tvayā ||
dvijātayo mahābhāgā vṛddhabālatapasviṣu ||
bhavanty akrodhanāḥ prāyo viruddheṣv api nityadā ||
sumahaty aparādhe 'pi kṣāntiḥ kāryā dvijātibhiḥ ||
yathāśakti yathotsāhaṃ pūjā grāhyā dvijottama ||
tatheti brāhmaṇenokte sa rājā prītamānasaḥ ||
haṃsacandrāṃśusaṃkāśaṃ gṛham asya nyavedayat ||
tatrāgniśaraṇe kḷptam āsanaṃ tasya bhānumat ||
āhārādi ca sarvaṃ tat tathaiva pratyavedayat ||
nikṣipya rājaputrī tu tandrīṃ mānaṃ tathaiva ca ||
ātasthe paramaṃ yatnaṃ brāhmaṇasyābhirādhane ||
tatra sā brāhmaṇaṃ gatvā pṛthā śaucaparā satī ||
vidhivat paricārārhaṃ devavat paryatoṣayat ||
The king said: 'Just so, fair one, you must act without doubt — for my benefit, for the family's benefit, and for your own, O beloved daughter.' Vaishampayana said: Having spoken thus, the famed Kuntibhoja, who cherished his daughter, gave Pritha to that brahmana. 'This is my daughter, O brahmana; she is young and has been raised in comfort. Whatever offense she may commit, do not take it to heart. The great twice-born are, for the most part, free from anger toward the old, the young, and ascetics, even when these act contrary to them — always. Even in the case of a very great offense, the twice-born must show forbearance. Accept her homage according to her strength and zeal, O best of the twice-born.' When the brahmana said, 'So be it,' the king, his heart rejoicing, showed him the house, radiant as a swan or a moonbeam. There, by the fire-chamber, a splendid seat had been prepared for him, along with food and everything else, just as had been promised. The princess, setting aside languor and pride, applied the utmost effort to the satisfaction of the brahmana. There Pritha, devoted to purity, went to the brahmana and, as befits one worthy of service, gratified him according to rule, as though he were a god.
