वैशंपायन उवाच
ते वीरा बद्धनिस्त्रिंशास् ततायुधकलापिनः ॥
बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्राणाः कालिन्दीम् अभितो ययुः ॥
ततस् ते दक्षिणं तीरम् अन्वगच्छन् पदातयः ॥
वसन्तो गिरिदुर्गेषु वनदुर्गेषु धन्विनः ॥
विध्यन्तो मृगजातानि महेष्वासा महाबलाः ॥
उत्तरेण दशार्णांस् ते पाञ्चालान् दक्षिणेन तु ॥
अन्तरेण यकृल्लोमाञ् शूरसेनांश् च पाण्डवाः ॥
लुब्धा ब्रुवाणा मत्स्यस्य विषयं प्राविशन् वनात् ॥

uttareṇa daśārṇāṃs te pāñcālān dakṣiṇena tu ||
antareṇa yakṛllomāñ śūrasenāṃś ca pāṇḍavāḥ ||
lubdhā bruvāṇā matsyasya viṣayaṃ prāviśan vanāt ||
Vaishampayana said: "Those heroes, girded with swords, their bows strung and quivers filled, their fingers guarded with lizard-skin, went round about the Kalindi. Then, on foot, they made their way along the southern bank, dwelling in mountain and forest strongholds -- archers, striking down every kind of beast. Those mighty bowmen, strong in power, passed north of the Dasharnas and south of the Panchalas; between the Yakrillomas and the Shurasenas the Pandavas, calling themselves hunters, came out of the forest into the land of the Matsyas."

The passage from the forest into Virata's kingdom is not instantaneous. The heroes still carry their weapons and their forest way of life, yet they are already learning to become what the foreign land will take them for.
