Vaishampayana said: "Having seen the bull among men, seated on the chariot in the guise of a eunuch, going toward the shami tree, and having seated Uttara on the chariot, the finest charioteers of the Kurus, headed by Bhishma and Drona, all became troubled in mind from fear of Dhananjaya. Seeing them with their courage broken, and seeing also the wondrous omens, the teacher, foremost among wielders of weapons, the son of Bharadvaja, spoke: 'Fitful winds are blowing, dry, with harsh sound. The sky is covered by a darkness the color of ash. Clouds of a harsh hue are seen, wondrous to behold; weapons of many kinds are slipping from their sheaths. These dreadful jackals are howling in the blazing quarter; horses shed tears; banners tremble though nothing stirs them. Whatever signs of this sort, many and varied, are seen here, they say the same thing: stand ready, for battle may be at hand. Guard yourselves, array the army, await the slaughter, and guard the cattle-wealth as well.'"

Drona's omens are no superstitious decoration. The world itself responds to Arjuna's return to arms: a hidden time is ending, and the battlefield senses the change before the men do.
