Arjuna said: "Having conquered all countries and seized wealth alone, I stand amid wealth; therefore they call me Dhananjaya. When I advance into battle against those mad with war, I do not return without victory; therefore they know me as Vijaya. White horses in golden harness are yoked to my chariot when I fight in battle; therefore I am Shvetavahana. I was born by day on the ridge of the Himavat under the two Phalguni stars, the northern and the earlier; therefore they know me as Phalguna. Long ago Shakra gave me a crown, radiant as the sun, upon my head, when I fought against the bulls of the danavas; therefore they call me Kiriti. I would never commit a disgraceful act while fighting; therefore among gods and men they know me as Bibhatsu. Both my hands are as the right hand in drawing the Gandiva; therefore among gods and men they know me as Savyasachin. On the four-cornered earth a complexion equal to mine is hard to find, and I perform pure deeds; therefore they know me as Arjuna. I am hard to approach, hard to overcome, a subduer, son of Pakashasana; therefore among gods and men I am renowned by the name Jishnu. And the tenth name, Krishna, my father gave me out of love for the child, who was dark and fair."

Arjuna ties his renown to a moral measure: victory, purity of action, mastery of both hands, refusal of base deeds. His names speak not only of strength but of self-control.
