'Dhananjaya, son of Kunti, would not refrain from fighting here out of fear -- not of gods, not of gandharvas, not of asuras, not of rakshasas. Whomever he, enraged, attacks in battle, that one he will come and strike down with the speed of Garuda, as if felling a tree. Who would not honor this Partha, who surpasses you in valor, who in archery equals the king of the immortals, and in battle equals Vasudeva? Let the divine fight the divine, and the human fight the human; let weapon meet weapon. What man among men is equal to Arjuna? Those who know dharma say: the disciple ranks immediately after the son. For this reason alone the Pandava is dear to Drona. Just as you arranged the game of dice, just as you seized Indraprastha, just as you brought Krishna [Draupadi] into the assembly -- so now fight with the Pandava. Here is your wise uncle, learned in the kshatriya's dharma, the Gandharan Shakuni, the god of foul dicing: let him fight here. Gandiva does not cast dice -- neither krita nor dvapara; Gandiva casts blazing, sharp, honed arrows. For the vulture-feathered, well-honed shafts loosed from Gandiva do not halt partway -- they will cleave through even mountains. Antaka, Shamana, Death itself, and the fire Vadavamukha may somewhere leave a remainder, but enraged Dhananjaya leaves none. Let the teacher fight, if he wishes; I will not fight Dhananjaya. Matsya must be our adversary, should he come following the trail of the cows.'

Ashvatthaman's speech is harsh, yet it draws a clear distinction: the game of dice and the Gandiva bow belong to different worlds. Deceit cannot stand against a direct meeting with true weapons.
