Between Bhishma and Partha there arose a tumultuous, hair-raising battle, like the fight of Bali with Vasava. The bhalla arrows of the two heroes met in the air and shone like fireflies in the rainy season. As Partha loosed arrows to right and left, the Gandiva seemed a whirling wheel of fire. He covered Bhishma with hundreds of sharp arrows, as a raincloud covers a mountain with streams of water; but Bhishma dispersed this rising flood of arrows and checked Arjuna. Again a cloud of golden-shafted arrows rose from the Pandava's chariot, like a swarm of flying locusts, and Bhishma once more scattered it with hundreds of sharp arrows. Then all the Kurus cried out: 'Well done! Well done! A hard deed has Bhishma done, in fighting Arjuna. The Pandava is strong, young, skilled, and swift; who else could withstand his onslaught in battle, save Bhishma, son of Shantanu, or Krishna, son of Devaki, or the mighty Bharadvaja, foremost of teachers?' The two bulls among men, warding off weapon with weapon, seemed almost to be playing, and bewildered the eyes of all beings. They employed the Prajapatya, the Aindra, the terrible Agneya, the Kaubera, the Varuna, the Yamya, and the Vayavya. The beings, watching them in battle, marveled and said: 'Well done, mighty Partha! Well done, Bhishma! Such a great display of weapons between Bhishma and Partha is not to be found among men.' Thus went on the battle of weapons between the two masters of all the astras. Then Jishnu turned and with a broad-bladed arrow cut away Bhishma's golden bow.

The text places Bhishma almost on equal footing with Arjuna, so that his defeat will not read as a caricature. Dharma triumphs not because the opponent is weak, but because even the greatest skill cannot save a wrong choice.
