And this last, the thirteenth year, they had to endure with extreme hardship. Yet, recognized by no one, they passed through it, as you know, bearing all manner of unbearable trials. This is known to all of you. These illustrious men spent the thirteenth year in the service of others. If this is so, you ought to consider what would be for the good of both Yudhishthira and Duryodhana, and what, with regard to the Kurus and the Pandavas, would accord with the rules of righteousness and propriety and meet with everyone's approval. The virtuous King Yudhishthira would not unrighteously desire even the kingdom of heaven. But he would righteously accept dominion even over a single village. How the sons of Dhritarashtra deceitfully took his ancestral kingdom from him, and how he lived a life full of unbearable hardship, is known to all the kings gathered here. The sons of Dhritarashtra are not able to overpower Arjuna, son of Pritha, by force. Nevertheless, King Yudhishthira and his friends desire nothing but the good of the son of Dhritarashtra.

This passage (5.1.11-15) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key themes: the Pandavas, Duryodhana, Dhritarashtra, dharma. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of an envoy, faithfulness to promises, and the kings' responsibility for the consequences of their decisions.
