द्रुपद उवाच
एवम् एतन् महाबाहो भविष्यति न संशयः ॥
न हि दुर्योधनो राज्यं मधुरेण प्रदास्यति ॥
अनुवर्त्स्यति तं चापि धृतराष्ट्रः सुतप्रियः ॥
भीष्मद्रोणौ च कार्पण्यान् मौर्ख्याद् राधेयसौबलौ ॥
बलदेवस्य वाक्यं तु मम ज्ञाने न युज्यते ॥
एतद् धि पुरुषेणाग्रे कार्यं सुनयम् इच्छता ॥
न तु वाच्यो मृदु वचो धार्तराष्ट्रः कथं चन ॥
न हि मार्दवसाध्यो ऽसौ पापबुद्धिर् मतो मम ॥
गर्दभे मार्दवं कुर्याद् गोषु तीक्ष्णं समाचरेत् ॥
मृदु दुर्योधने वाक्यं यो ब्रूयात् पापचेतसि ॥
drupada uvāca
evam etan mahābāho bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ||
na hi duryodhano rājyaṃ madhureṇa pradāsyati ||
anuvartsyati taṃ cāpi dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ sutapriyaḥ ||
bhīṣmadroṇau ca kārpaṇyān maurkhyād rādheyasaubalau ||
baladevasya vākyaṃ tu mama jñāne na yujyate ||
etad dhi puruṣeṇāgre kāryaṃ sunayam icchatā ||
na tu vācyo mṛdu vaco dhārtarāṣṭraḥ kathaṃ cana ||
na hi mārdavasādhyo 'sau pāpabuddhir mato mama ||
gardabhe mārdavaṃ kuryād goṣu tīkṣṇaṃ samācaret ||
mṛdu duryodhane vākyaṃ yo brūyāt pāpacetasi ||
Drupada said: "O mighty-armed one, without doubt it will be as you say. Duryodhana will never give up the kingdom through sweet words, and Dhritarashtra, who dotes on his son, will follow him in this. So too, out of weakness, will Bhishma and Drona, and out of folly, Karna and Shakuni. As for Baladeva's counsel, it does not accord with my judgment — though indeed, this is what a man should do first who desires a wise course. But Duryodhana should never be addressed with gentle words. Being evil-minded by nature, I hold that he cannot be won over by gentleness.
