You must first say this to them, O Sanjaya: I hope that you, mothers of living sons, are treated by your sons kindly, attentively, and worthily. Then you should tell them that all is well with Yudhishthira and his sons. As for those women, O Sanjaya, who hold the rank of our wives, you must ask after their well-being, addressing them also with these words: I hope you are well protected. I hope your righteous fame remains unblemished. I hope you live in your homes blamelessly and with care. I hope you comfort yourselves toward your fathers-in-law with kindness, praiseworthiness, and attentiveness. You must always conduct yourselves so as to win your husbands' favor! As for those young women, O Sanjaya, who stand to us as your daughters-in-law, who have come from noble families, who possess merit and are mothers of children — you must meet with all of them and tell them that Yudhishthira sends them his warm greetings. You must, O Sanjaya, embrace the daughters of your household and ask after their well-being on my behalf.

This passage (5.30.31-35) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inescapable war. Key themes: Sanjaya. Here dharma is revealed through speech, the choice of an envoy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
