Many chariots belonging to the Pandavas and the Panchalas move in separate columns to gladden Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, ready to take the field. As the sky brightens at the coming of the rising sun, so the Panchalas rejoice in their alliance with the son of Kunti, blazing with splendor, risen like a stream of light. The Panchalas, the Kekayas, and the Matsyas, together with the herdsmen who tend their cows and sheep, rejoice and gladden Yudhishthira, son of Pandu. Young women of the brahmana, kshatriya, and vaishya families come in great numbers, playful in mood, having seen Partha in his armor.

This passage (5.50.6-10) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds against the backdrop of an already inevitable war. Key theme: war. Dharma here reveals itself through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
