भगवान् उवाच
एवम् एतन् महाबाहो यथा वदसि पाण्डव ॥
सर्वं त्व् इदं समायत्तं बीभत्सो कर्मणोर् द्वयोः ॥
क्षेत्रं हि रसवच् छुद्धं कर्षकेणोपपादितम् ॥
ऋते वर्षं न कौन्तेय जातु निर्वर्तयेत् फलम् ॥
तत्र वै पौरुषं ब्रूयुर् आसेकं यत्नकारितम् ॥
तत्र चापि ध्रुवं पश्येच् छोषणं दैवकारितम् ॥
तद् इदं निश्चितं बुद्ध्या पूर्वैर् अपि महात्मभिः ॥
दैवे च मानुषे चैव संयुक्तं लोककारणम् ॥
अहं हि तत् करिष्यामि परं पुरुषकारतः ॥
दैवं तु न मया शक्यं कर्म कर्तुं कथं चन ॥

tatra vai pauruṣaṃ brūyur āsekaṃ yatnakāritam ||
tatra cāpi dhruvaṃ paśyec choṣaṇaṃ daivakāritam ||
tad idaṃ niścitaṃ buddhyā pūrvair api mahātmabhiḥ ||
daive ca mānuṣe caiva saṃyuktaṃ lokakāraṇam ||
ahaṃ hi tat kariṣyāmi paraṃ puruṣakārataḥ ||
daivaṃ tu na mayā śakyaṃ karma kartuṃ kathaṃ cana ||
The Blessed One said: "I said all this only out of love, wishing to know your mind, not from a desire to reproach you, nor from pride in learning, nor from anger, nor from a wish to deliver a speech. I know the greatness of your soul, as well as your strength and your deeds. It was not for this reason that I reproached you. O son of Pandu, a thousand times greater will be the benefit rendered by you. You, O Bhima, together with your kinsmen and friends, are exactly what a man born in a family like yours -- honored by all the kings of the earth -- ought to be."
