अत्राप्य् उदाहरन्तीमम् इतिहासं पुरातनम् ॥
मातलेर् दातुकामस्य कन्यां मृगयतो वरम् ॥
मतस् त्रैलोक्यराजस्य मातलिर् नाम सारथिः ॥
तस्यैकैव कुले कन्या रूपतो लोकविश्रुता ॥
गुणकेशीति विख्याता नाम्ना सा देवरूपिणी ॥
श्रिया च वपुषा चैव स्त्रियो ऽन्याः सातिरिच्यते ॥
तस्याः प्रदानसमयं मातलिः सह भार्यया ॥
ज्ञात्वा विममृशे राजंस् तत्परः परिचिन्तयन् ॥
धिक् खल्व् अलघुशीलानाम् उच्छ्रितानां यशस्विनाम् ॥
नराणाम् ऋद्धसत्त्वानां कुले कन्याप्ररोहणम् ॥

In battle, O great king, nothing is to be seen but utter destruction. Indeed, what merit do you see in the annihilation of both sides? If the Pandavas are slain in battle, or if your own mighty sons fall, tell me, O bull of the Bharata race, what happiness will you then enjoy? All of them are brave and skilled in arms. All of them thirst for battle -- the Pandavas no less than your sons. Oh, save them from the terrible danger that threatens them. After the battle you will see neither the Kurus nor all the Pandavas remaining. As chariot-warriors are slain by chariot-warriors, you will watch the heroes of both sides dwindle in number and in strength. All the rulers of the earth, O best of kings, have gathered together. Inflamed with wrath, they will surely destroy the population of the earth. Save the world, O king. Let not the people of the earth be destroyed. O son of the Kuru race, if you restore your natural disposition, the earth can continue to be inhabited as it is now. Save these kings, O king -- all of them of pure lineage, endowed with modesty, generosity, and piety, and bound to one another by ties of kinship or alliance -- from the terrible danger that threatens them. Setting aside anger and enmity, O scourge of enemies, let these kings, embracing one another in peace, eat and drink together, dressed in fine garments and adorned with garlands, and, exchanging courtesies, return to their homes. May the love you once felt for the Pandavas be reborn in your heart, and may it, O bull of the Bharata race, lead to the establishment of peace. Bereft of their father in infancy, they were raised by you. Guard them now, as befits you, O bull of the Bharata race, as though they were your own sons. It is your duty to protect them. And this is especially so when they are afflicted. O bull of the Bharata race, do not let your virtue and your gain be lost. Greeting you and seeking to conciliate you, the Pandavas have said to you: 'At your command, together with our followers, we endured great suffering. For these twelve years we lived in the forest, and in the thirteenth year we lived incognito in an uninhabited part of the world.'
