译文

It was here that the Lord of creatures—the great Master of all created things—Mahadeva—performed the most severe austerities for the good of all beings. Here dwell many twice-born and great Rishis observing the vow called "Go," worn thin by the reading and study of the Vedas, who, restraining the vital breath called Prana, have attained the heavens through the power of their austerities. It is said that a man takes the vow called Go when he sleeps wherever he pleases, eats whatever others offer him, and clothes himself in whatever garments others may provide. Here, in the line of the renowned elephant Supratika, were born the finest of elephants, known by the names Airavata, Vamana, Kumuda, and Anjana, the first of whom was the king of his kind. Look, O Matali, and see if there is here any suitor distinguished by the possession of the highest virtues, for then I shall go to him and respectfully entreat him to accept your daughter.
