'Then this lovely, large-eyed maiden shall become for you the mother of sons, as the arani becomes the womb of sacrificial fires.' Narada said: 'Having heard these words, King Haryashva, deluded by desire, humbly said to Galava, the royal sage, best of sages: "I have two hundred horses of the kind you require; my other horses number in the hundreds, but they are not of the sort you need. Therefore, O Galava, I will beget from her a single child. Let your honor accomplish this wish of mine, this boon for me." Hearing this, the maiden said to Galava: "A certain boon was granted to me by a certain knower of Brahman."'

Haryashva cannot pay the full bride-price, but offers a part of it — two hundred horses and one son. His desire is bound up with the limits of his means. Madhavi herself now enters the conversation: her gift changes the situation and makes a staged payment possible.
