मम तात पिता राजञ् शंतनुर् लोकविश्रुतः ॥
तस्याहम् एक एवासं पुत्रः पुत्रवतां वरः ॥
तस्य बुद्धिः समुत्पन्ना द्वितीयः स्यात् कथं सुतः ॥
एकपुत्रम् अपुत्रं वै प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ॥
न चोच्छेदं कुलं यायाद् विस्तीर्येत कथं यशः ॥
तस्याहम् ईप्सितं बुद्ध्वा कालीं मातरम् आवहम् ॥
प्रतिज्ञां दुष्करां कृत्वा पितुर् अर्थे कुलस्य च ॥
अराजा चोर्ध्वरेताश् च यथा सुविदितं तव ॥
प्रतीतो निवसाम्य् एष प्रतिज्ञाम् अनुपालयन् ॥
तस्यां जज्ञे महाबाहुः श्रीमान् कुरुकुलोद्वहः ॥
विचित्रवीर्यो धर्मात्मा कनीयान् मम पार्थिवः ॥

na cocchedaṃ kulaṃ yāyād vistīryeta kathaṃ yaśaḥ ||
tasyāham īpsitaṃ buddhvā kālīṃ mātaram āvaham ||
pratijñāṃ duṣkarāṃ kṛtvā pitur arthe kulasya ca ||
arājā cordhvaretāś ca yathā suviditaṃ tava ||
pratīto nivasāmy eṣa pratijñām anupālayan ||
tasyāṃ jajñe mahābāhuḥ śrīmān kurukulodvahaḥ ||
vicitravīryo dharmātmā kanīyān mama pārthivaḥ ||
"'My son, my father, King Shantanu, was renowned throughout the world. To him I was the only son, the best among sons. Then a thought arose in him: how might a second son come to be? For the wise say that one who has a single son is as good as childless. So that the family line would not come to an end and its fame might spread, I understood his wish and brought Kali-Satyavati into the house as mother. For the sake of my father and the family, I took a difficult vow: not to be king and to remain celibate, as is well known to you. So I live, known for keeping this vow. From her was born Vichitravirya — mighty-armed, glorious, righteous, upholder of the Kuru line, and my younger brother, O ruler.'"

Krishna recounts to the Pandavas how Bhishma tried to restrain Duryodhana by the force of his own example. The account of Bhishma's own vow shows that the dharma of a family demands not proud possession but self-restraint for the sake of preserving the family and its rightful inheritance.
