जनमेजय उवाच
तथा व्यूढेष्व् अनीकेषु कुरुक्षेत्रे द्विजर्षभ ॥
किम् अकुर्वन्त कुरवः कालेनाभिप्रचोदिताः ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
तथा व्यूढेष्व् अनीकेषु यत् तेषु भरतर्षभ ॥
धृतराष्ट्रो महाराज संजयं वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥
एहि संजय मे सर्वम् आचक्ष्वानवशेषतः ॥
सेनानिवेशे यद्वृत्तं कुरुपाण्डवसेनयोः ॥
दिष्टम् एव परं मन्ये पौरुषं चाप्य् अनर्थकम् ॥
यद् अहं जानमानो ऽपि युद्धदोषान् क्षयोदयान् ॥
तथापि निकृतिप्रज्ञं पुत्रं दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् ॥
न शक्नोमि नियन्तुं वा कर्तुं वा हितम् आत्मनः ॥
janamejaya uvāca
tathā vyūḍheṣv anīkeṣu kurukṣetre dvijarṣabha ||
kim akurvanta kuravaḥ kālenābhipracoditāḥ ||
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tathā vyūḍheṣv anīkeṣu yat teṣu bharatarṣabha ||
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahārāja saṃjayaṃ vākyam abravīt ||
ehi saṃjaya me sarvam ācakṣvānavaśeṣataḥ ||
senāniveśe yadvṛttaṃ kurupāṇḍavasenayoḥ ||
diṣṭam eva paraṃ manye pauruṣaṃ cāpy anarthakam ||
yad ahaṃ jānamāno 'pi yuddhadoṣān kṣayodayān ||
tathāpi nikṛtiprajñaṃ putraṃ durdyūtadevinam ||
na śaknomi niyantuṃ vā kartuṃ vā hitam ātmanaḥ ||
Janamejaya said: 'When the armies were thus arrayed on Kurukshetra, O best of the twice-born, what did the Kurus do, driven by time?' Vaishampayana said: When the armies were thus arrayed, O best of the Bharatas, Dhritarashtra, O great king, spoke these words to Sanjaya: 'Come, Sanjaya, and tell me everything without omission: what happened in the encampment of the armies of the Kurus and the Pandavas. I consider fate supreme, and human effort useless, for though I know the evils of war and the rise of destruction, still I can neither restrain my son, skilled in deceit and devoted to wicked dicing, nor bring about my own good.'

Here the narrative turns from the preparation for war to its inner cause. Dhritarashtra tries to shelter behind fate, but Sanjaya returns responsibility to deeds: fate, time, and past karma do act, yet they do not annul the moral guilt for evil knowingly committed. Thus the war is shown not as chance, but as the fruit of a long refusal of dharma.
