तस्योपविष्टस्य ततो विश्रान्तस्योपशृण्वतः ॥
पुनर् एव कथां चक्रुः कन्यां प्रति वनौकसः ॥
अम्बायास् तां कथां श्रुत्वा काशिराज्ञश् च भारत ॥
स वेपमान उत्थाय मातुर् अस्याः पिता तदा ॥
तां कन्याम् अङ्कम् आरोप्य पर्याश्वासयत प्रभो ॥
स ताम् अपृच्छत् कार्त्स्न्येन व्यसनोत्पत्तिम् आदितः ॥
सा च तस्मै यथावृत्तं विस्तरेण न्यवेदयत् ॥
ततः स राजर्षिर् अभूद् दुःखशोकसमन्वितः ॥
कार्यं च प्रतिपेदे तन् मनसा सुमहातपाः ॥
अब्रवीद् वेपमानश् च कन्याम् आर्तां सुदुःखितः ॥
मा गाः पितृगृहं भद्रे मातुस् ते जनको ह्य् अहम् ॥

tataḥ sa rājarṣir abhūd duḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ ||
kāryaṃ ca pratipede tan manasā sumahātapāḥ ||
abravīd vepamānaś ca kanyām ārtāṃ suduḥkhitaḥ ||
mā gāḥ pitṛgṛhaṃ bhadre mātus te janako hy aham ||
When he had sat down, rested, and begun to listen, the forest dwellers once more took up the tale of the girl. Hearing this tale of Amba and the king of Kashi, O Bharata, he — the father of her mother — rose up trembling, set the girl upon his lap, and began to comfort her, O sovereign. He questioned her fully, from the very beginning, about the origin of her misfortune, and she related to him at length all that had happened. Then this royal sage, the great ascetic, was filled with pain and grief, and in his heart resolved what must be done. Trembling and deeply grieved, he said to the suffering girl: 'O gracious one, do not go to your father's house. I am the father of your mother.'

In this chapter Amba's plight moves from personal grief toward a search for effective protection. The ascetics propose the ordinary social path: return the girl to her father's authority, since life in the forest is dangerous, especially for a princess without support. Amba refuses: returning would mean disgrace among her kin and would not heal the wound within her. The arrival of Hotravahana changes the course of events — he takes up her suffering as a family duty and directs her to Rama Jamadagnya. Thus austerity, kinship responsibility, and kshatriya retribution converge on a single path, one leading toward the future confrontation with Bhishma.
