वैशंपायन उवाच
ततः पूर्वापरे संध्ये समीक्ष्य भगवान् ऋषिः ॥
सर्ववेदविदां श्रेष्ठो व्यासः सत्यवतीसुतः ॥
भविष्यति रणे घोरे भरतानां पितामहः ॥
प्रत्यक्षदर्शी भगवान् भूतभव्यभविष्यवित् ॥
वैचित्रवीर्यं राजानं स रहस्यं ब्रवीद् इदम् ॥
शोचन्तम् आर्तं ध्यायन्तं पुत्राणाम् अनयं तदा ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tataḥ pūrvāpare saṃdhye samīkṣya bhagavān ṛṣiḥ ||
sarvavedavidāṃ śreṣṭho vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ ||
bhaviṣyati raṇe ghore bharatānāṃ pitāmahaḥ ||
pratyakṣadarśī bhagavān bhūtabhavyabhaviṣyavit ||
vaicitravīryaṃ rājānaṃ sa rahasyaṃ bravīd idam ||
śocantam ārtaṃ dhyāyantaṃ putrāṇām anayaṃ tadā ||
Vaishampayana said: 'Then the blessed rishi Vyasa, son of Satyavati, the foremost among the knowers of all the Vedas, closely observed the morning and evening twilights. The holy sage, who saw directly what would come to pass in the terrible battle of the Bharatas, and who knew the past, the present, and the future, spoke this in private to King Dhritarashtra, son of Vichitravirya, who at that time was grieving, suffering, and brooding over the misfortune of his sons.'

The chapter opens with Vyasa's gaze, which sees not only outward omens but the inner outcome of the war. Dhritarashtra still lives in anxiety for his sons, while Vyasa already speaks from a wider knowledge of time: past, present, and future converge in the inevitable fruit of adharma.
