The great Hemakuta is called the mountain Kailasa; there King Vaishravana delights together with the guhyakas. To the north of Kailasa, toward Mount Mainaka, lies the great divine mountain Hiranyashringa, made of gems. On its slope lies a great, divine, beautiful and pleasant lake with golden sand, called Bindusaras; there King Bhagiratha, having beheld the Ganga Bhagirathi, dwelt for many years. There stand jewelled sacrificial posts and golden altars; having performed sacrifice there, the greatly renowned Thousand-Eyed one attained perfection. There the eternal Lord of Creatures, having created all the worlds, is worshipped in the company of assembled beings; with him are Nara and Narayana, Brahma, Manu, and Sthanu as the fifth. There the goddess who flows in three paths was first established; descending from the world of Brahma, she divides into seven streams: Vasvokasara, Nalini, Pavana, Sarasvati, Jambunadi, Sita, Ganga, and the seventh, Sindhu. Inconceivable is this divine design of the Lord: there, at the turn of a thousand yugas, a long sacrificial rite is performed. Sarasvati, in various places, is now visible, now invisible. These seven divine Gangas are renowned throughout the three worlds.

The account of Bindusaras and the seven streams of the Ganga binds cosmography to the order of sacrifice and the sacred. Water here is more than a natural element: it carries a descending grace, joining Brahmaloka, the earth, and the paths of purification, while remaining an inconceivable ordinance of the Lord.
