In front marched many hundreds of thousands of foot-soldiers, guardians of Bhimasena, with swords, shaktis, and rishtis in hand. Behind the king moved ten thousand heroic elephants: their temples streaming with musth-fluid, shining in golden nets like mountains, moist with ichor and fragrant as lotuses, like clouds pouring down torrents. Bhimasena, hard to overcome and magnanimous, dragging his terrible mace, resembling an iron bar, drew the vast army on behind him. The warriors on every side could not bear to look at him up close, as at a blazing sun ringed with rays. This dread array, called Vajra, was hard to breach, faced in every direction, its banner bearing a bow that shone like lightning, and it was guarded by the wielder of Gandiva. Having drawn it up, the Pandavas stood against your army; protected by them, it was unconquerable in the human world.

Here Bhima becomes the visible point of the Pandavas: infantry before him, the massed strength of elephants behind, Arjuna's protection at his side. The image of the sun shows not only physical might but also the impossibility for the enemy to meet this force without inner dread.
