देवद्विजगुरुप्राज्ञपूजनं शौचम् आर्जवम् ॥
ब्रह्मचर्यम् अहिंसा च शारीरं तप उच्यते ॥
अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यं सत्यं प्रियहितं च यत् ॥
स्वाध्यायाभ्यसनं चैव वाङ्मयं तप उच्यते ॥
मनःप्रसादः सौम्यत्वं मौनम् आत्मविनिग्रहः ॥
भावसंशुद्धिर् इत्य् एतत् तपो मानसम् उच्यते ॥
श्रद्धया परया तप्तं तपस् तत् त्रिविधं नरैः ॥
अफलाकाङ्क्षिभिर् युक्तैः सात्त्विकं परिचक्षते ॥
सत्कारमानपूजार्थं तपो दम्भेन चैव यत् ॥
क्रियते तद् इह प्रोक्तं राजसं चलम् अध्रुवम् ॥
मूढग्राहेणात्मनो यत् पीडया क्रियते तपः ॥
परस्योत्सादनार्थं वा तत् तामसम् उदाहृतम् ॥

brahmacaryam ahiṃsā ca śārīraṃ tapa ucyate ||
anudvegakaraṃ vākyaṃ satyaṃ priyahitaṃ ca yat ||

manaḥprasādaḥ saumyatvaṃ maunam ātmavinigrahaḥ ||
bhāvasaṃśuddhir ity etat tapo mānasam ucyate ||
śraddhayā parayā taptaṃ tapas tat trividhaṃ naraiḥ ||
aphalākāṅkṣibhir yuktaiḥ sāttvikaṃ paricakṣate ||
satkāramānapūjārthaṃ tapo dambhena caiva yat ||
kriyate tad iha proktaṃ rājasaṃ calam adhruvam ||
mūḍhagrāheṇātmano yat pīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ ||
parasyotsādanārthaṃ vā tat tāmasam udāhṛtam ||
"Worship of the gods, the twice-born, the teacher, and the wise, purity, uprightness, brahmacharya, and nonviolence are called austerity of the body. Speech that does not cause distress, that is truthful, pleasant, and beneficial, together with the constant practice of sacred study, are called austerity of speech. Clarity of mind, gentleness, silence, self-restraint, and purity of intention are called austerity of the mind. When this threefold austerity is performed by people with supreme faith, in a composed manner and without desire for fruit, it is called sattvic. Austerity performed out of hypocrisy for the sake of honor, respect, and reverence is here called rajasic: it is unsteady and impermanent. Austerity performed out of foolish obstinacy, through self-torment, or for the destruction of another, is declared tamasic."
