ते सेने सागरप्रख्ये मुहुः प्रचलिते नृप ॥
विमुच्य कवचं वीरो निक्षिप्य च वरायुधम् ॥
अवरुह्य रथात् तूर्णं पद्भ्याम् एव कृताञ्जलिः ॥
पितामहम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
वाग्यतः प्रययौ येन प्राङ्मुखो रिपुवाहिनीम् ॥
तं प्रयान्तम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ॥
अवतीर्य रथात् तूर्णं भ्रातृभिः सहितो ऽन्वयात् ॥
वासुदेवश् च भगवान् पृष्ठतो ऽनुजगाम ह ॥
यथामुख्याश् च राजानस् तम् अन्वाजग्मुर् उत्सुकाः ॥

译文

Then Yudhishthira saw the two armies, resembling oceans, again and again stirring into motion, fully ready for battle. The hero removed his armor, set aside his excellent weapon, quickly descended from his chariot, and, with palms joined, went on foot toward the enemy army. Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, restraining his speech, walked toward Bhishma, his grandfather. Seeing him going, Dhananjaya, son of Kunti, quickly descended from his chariot and followed him together with his brothers. Lord Vasudeva followed behind, and the principal kings, troubled, followed after him.

注释

Yudhishthira begins the war not with a blow but with reverence for his elders. His act shows that dharma does not vanish even on the field of battle: the right to fight demands inner purity and respect for those through whom knowledge and upbringing came.
