संजय उवाच
भ्रातृभिः सहितो राजन् पुत्रो दुर्योधनस् तव ॥
भीष्मं प्रमुखतः कृत्वा प्रययौ सह सेनया ॥
तथैव पाण्डवाः सर्वे भीमसेनपुरोगमाः ॥
भीष्मेण युद्धम् इच्छन्तः प्रययुर् हृष्टमानसाः ॥
क्ष्वेडाः किलकिलाशब्दाः क्रकचा गोविषाणिकाः ॥
भेरीमृदङ्गमुरजा हयकुञ्जरनिस्वनाः ॥
उभयोः सेनयो राजंस् ततस् ते ऽस्मान् समाद्रवन् ॥
वयं प्रतिनदन्तश् च तदासीत् तुमुलं महत् ॥
महान्त्य् अनीकानि महासमुच्छ्रये; समागमे पाण्डवधार्तराष्ट्रयोः ॥
चकम्पिरे शङ्खमृदङ्गनिस्वनैः; प्रकम्पितानीव वनानि वायुना ॥
नरेन्द्रनागाश्वरथाकुलानाम्; अभ्यायतीनाम् अशिवे मुहूर्ते ॥
बभूव घोषस् तुमुलश् चमूनां; वातोद्धुतानाम् इव सागराणाम् ॥

bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito rājan putro duryodhanas tava ||
bhīṣmaṃ pramukhataḥ kṛtvā prayayau saha senayā ||
tathaiva pāṇḍavāḥ sarve bhīmasenapurogamāḥ ||
bhīṣmeṇa yuddham icchantaḥ prayayur hṛṣṭamānasāḥ ||
kṣveḍāḥ kilakilāśabdāḥ krakacā goviṣāṇikāḥ ||
bherīmṛdaṅgamurajā hayakuñjaranisvanāḥ ||
ubhayoḥ senayo rājaṃs tatas te 'smān samādravan ||
vayaṃ pratinadantaś ca tadāsīt tumulaṃ mahat ||
mahānty anīkāni mahāsamucchraye; samāgame pāṇḍavadhārtarāṣṭrayoḥ ||
cakampire śaṅkhamṛdaṅganisvanaiḥ; prakampitānīva vanāni vāyunā ||
narendranāgāśvarathākulānām; abhyāyatīnām aśive muhūrte ||
babhūva ghoṣas tumulaś camūnāṃ; vātoddhutānām iva sāgarāṇām ||
Sanjaya said: "O king, your son Duryodhana, together with his brothers, set Bhishma at the head and marched forth with his army. In the same way all the Pandavas, led by Bhimasena, joyful at heart, went forth desiring battle with Bhishma. Battle-cries, exultant shouts, rattles, bull-horns, bheris, mridangas, and murajas, together with the neighing of horses and the trumpeting of elephants, rose up in both armies. Then they charged upon us, and we answered with a roar; a great tumult arose. The vast armies of the Pandavas and the sons of Dhritarashtra, at the towering swell of their meeting, trembled at the sound of conches and mridangas, like forests shaken by the wind. As the armies, crowded with kings, elephants, horses, and chariots, advanced in that ominous hour, their deafening roar became like the sound of oceans stirred up by a storm."
