The Pandava advanced, shattering the Kaurava army and the Shurasenas, swiftly loosing arrows and destroying those who tormented his friends. Bhishma, son of Shantanu, protected by the Saindhavas in the vanguard, the Prachyas, Sauviras, and Kekayas, suddenly came forth to meet Arjuna, who rushed on like a furious elephant, terrifying the heroes in battle and felling them with arrows. Who, other than the grandfather of the Kurus, Drona, or Vaikartana, could come forward in a chariot to meet the wielder of Gandiva? Then Bhishma, grandfather of the Kauravas, covered Arjuna with seventy-seven narachas, O great king. Drona struck him with twenty-five arrows, Kripa with fifty, Duryodhana with sixty-four, Shalya with nine, Saindhava with nine, Shakuni with five, and Vikarna, O king, pierced the Pandava with ten bhallas. But the mighty-armed great archer, struck from every side by sharp arrows, did not flinch, like a mountain being split. In return he struck Bhishma with twenty-five arrows, Kripa with nine, Drona with sixty, Vikarna with three, Artayani with three, and the king with five, O best of the Bharatas. Then Satyaki, Virata, Dhrishtadyumna Parshata, and the sons of Draupadi together with Abhimanyu surrounded Dhananjaya. Then the Panchala prince, together with the Somakas, showered arrows upon Drona, the great archer devoted to Gangeya's welfare. Bhishma, the finest of chariot-warriors, swiftly pierced the Pandava with eighty sharp arrows, and your warriors cried out. Hearing the joyous shout of those rejoicing, the blazing lion of chariots, Dhananjaya, entered the midst of these lion-like chariot-warriors and, making the great chariot-warriors his targets, seemed to play with his bow.

Arjuna enters the center not for personal glory, but to halt the army's collapse. His stillness under a hail of arrows reveals an inner composure without which outward valor quickly breaks.
