सात्यकिं चाभिमन्युं च महत्या सेनया सह ॥
गान्धाराः समरे शूरा रुरुधुः सहसौबलाः ॥
तत्र सौबलकाः क्रुद्धा वार्ष्णेयस्य रथोत्तमम् ॥
तिलशश् चिच्छिदुः क्रोधाच् छस्त्रैर् नानाविधैर् युधि ॥
सात्यकिस् तु रथं त्यक्त्वा वर्तमाने महाभये ॥
अभिमन्यो रथं तूर्णम् आरुरोह परंतपः ॥
ताव् एकरथसंयुक्तौ सौबलेयस्य वाहिनीम् ॥
व्यधमेतां शितैस् तूर्णं शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥
द्रोणभीष्मौ रणे यत्तौ धर्मराजस्य वाहिनीम् ॥
नाशयेतां शरैस् तीक्ष्णैः कङ्कपत्रपरिच्छदैः ॥
ततो धर्मसुतो राजा माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ॥
मिषतां सर्वसैन्यानां द्रोणानीकम् उपाद्रवन् ॥
तत्रासीत् सुमहद् युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् ॥
यथा देवासुरं युद्धं पूर्वम् आसीत् सुदारुणम् ॥

tāv ekarathasaṃyuktau saubaleyasya vāhinīm ||
vyadhametāṃ śitais tūrṇaṃ śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ||
droṇabhīṣmau raṇe yattau dharmarājasya vāhinīm ||
nāśayetāṃ śarais tīkṣṇaiḥ kaṅkapatraparicchadaiḥ ||
tato dharmasuto rājā mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau ||
miṣatāṃ sarvasainyānāṃ droṇānīkam upādravan ||
tatrāsīt sumahad yuddhaṃ tumulaṃ lomaharṣaṇam ||
yathā devāsuraṃ yuddhaṃ pūrvam āsīt sudāruṇam ||
The heroic Gandharas, together with Saubala and a great host, surrounded Satyaki and Abhimanyu in battle. There the enraged Saubalakas, with weapons of various kinds, shattered the excellent chariot of Varshneya to pieces. While the great danger continued, Satyaki, leaving his chariot, swiftly mounted Abhimanyu's chariot. The two of them, joined upon a single ratha, swiftly scattered Saubala's army with sharp, well-jointed arrows. Drona and Bhishma, straining in battle, destroyed Dharmaraja's army with sharp arrows fletched with kanka feathers. Then the king, son of Dharma, and both Pandavas, the sons of Madri, in full view of all the armies, charged at Drona's formation. There a great, tumultuous battle took place, hair-raising, like the ancient dreadful war between the gods and the asuras."

Satyaki and Abhimanyu end up on a single chariot, and this underscores the resourcefulness of the Pandavas' allies: the loss of a ratha does not mean the end of the fight. Where the bond between warriors is alive, a way to keep fighting is quickly found.
