irāvāṃś ca tataḥ pucche makarasya vyavasthitau ||
evam etan mahāvyūhaṃ vyūhya bhārata pāṇḍavāḥ ||
sūryodaye mahārāja punar yuddhāya daṃśitāḥ ||
kauravān abhyayus tūrṇaṃ hastyaśvarathapattibhiḥ ||
samucchritair dhvajaiś citraiḥ śastraiś ca vimalaiḥ śitaiḥ ||
The head of this formation was Drupada, and Dhananjaya the Pandava. Its two eyes were Sahadeva and the great chariot-warrior Nakula. The snout, o great king, was mighty Bhimasena of great strength. Saubhadra, the sons of Draupadi, the rakshasa Ghatotkacha, Satyaki, and Dharmaraja took up the neck of the formation. The back, o great king, was Virata, lord of the army, together with Dhrishtadyumna, surrounded by a great army. The five brothers of Kekaya took up the left side; Dhrishtaketu, tiger among men, and valiant Karakarsha stood on the right wing, guarding the formation. At the feet stood the glorious great chariot-warriors Kuntibhoja and Shatanika, surrounded by a large army. The mighty great archer Shikhandin, surrounded by the Somakas, and Iravan were stationed at the tail of the makara. Thus the Pandavas arrayed this great formation, and at sunrise, o great king, they again advanced upon the Kauravas, ready for battle, with elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers, with tall, many-colored banners raised, and with bright, sharp weapons.'
