विहृत्य च ततो राजन् सहिताः कुरुपाण्डवाः ॥
व्यतीतायां तु शर्वर्यां पुनर् युद्धाय निर्ययुः ॥
तत्र शब्दो महान् आसीत् तव तेषां च भारत ॥
युज्यतां रथमुख्यानां कल्प्यतां चैव दन्तिनाम् ॥
संनह्यतां पदातीनां हयानां चैव भारत ॥
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनादश् च तुमुलः सर्वतो ऽभवत् ॥
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा धृष्टद्युम्नम् अभाषत ॥
व्यूहं व्यूह महाबाहो मकरं शत्रुतापनम् ॥
एवम् उक्तस् तु पार्थेन धृष्टद्युम्नो महारथः ॥
व्यादिदेश महाराज रथिनो रथिनां वरः ॥

vyādideśa mahārāja rathino rathināṃ varaḥ ||

तव तेषाम् च भारतtava teṣām ca bhārataof yours and of theirs, o Bharata; among yours and among theirs

युज्यताम् रथमुख्यानाम्yujyatām rathamukhyānāmlet the finest chariots be yoked; yoke the foremost chariots

कल्प्यताम् च एव दन्तिनाम्kalpyatām ca eva dantināmand let the elephants be made ready; prepare the elephants

संनह्यताम् पदातीनाम्saṃnahyatām padātīnāmlet the foot soldiers arm themselves; equip the infantry

हयानाम् च एव भारतhayānām ca eva bhārataand the horses too, o Bharata; and the horses

शङ्खदुन्दुभिनादः चśaṅkhadundubhinādaḥ caand the sound of conches and drums; the din of shankhas and dundubhis

तुमुलः सर्वतः अभवत्tumulaḥ sarvataḥ abhavattumultuous, arose from every side; became loud everywhere

ततः युधिष्ठिरः राजाtataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājāthen King Yudhishthira; after this, Yudhishthira

धृष्टद्युम्नम् अभाषतdhṛṣṭadyumnam abhāṣataaddressed Dhrishtadyumna; spoke to Dhrishtadyumna

व्यूहम् व्यूह महाबाहोvyūham vyūha mahābāhoarray the formation, o mighty-armed one; arrange the battle array

मकरम् शत्रुतापनम्makaram śatrutāpanamthe makara, scorcher of foes; the makara formation

एवम् उक्तः तु पार्थेनevam uktaḥ tu pārthenathus addressed by Partha; after the words of Partha

धृष्टद्युम्नः महारथःdhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ mahārathaḥDhrishtadyumna, the great chariot-warrior; the great warrior Dhrishtadyumna

व्यादिदेश महाराजvyādideśa mahārājagave the orders, o great king; issued commands

रथिनः रथिनाम् वरःrathinaḥ rathinām varaḥto the chariot-warriors, the best of chariot-warriors; to the rathins, foremost among them

译文

Sanjaya said: 'Having rested, o king, the Kurus and Pandavas together went forth again to battle when the night had passed. There, o Bharata, a great tumult arose among your men and theirs: "Yoke the finest chariots! Make ready the elephants! Arm the foot soldiers and the horses!" And from every side arose the tumultuous sound of conches and drums. Then King Yudhishthira addressed Dhrishtadyumna: "Array the makara formation, scorcher of foes, o mighty-armed one." Thus addressed by Partha, the great chariot-warrior Dhrishtadyumna, foremost of chariot-warriors, gave his orders to the charioteers, o great king.'

A new day begins not with reflection but with commands and the sounds of preparation. Yudhishthira entrusts the arraying of the army to Dhrishtadyumna: the righteous king acts through his commander, preserving order amid the oncoming chaos.
