While this was happening, the enraged Pandavas fought against the great charioteer Bhishma in battle, O bull of the Bharatas. As the sun grew red, the swift Dhananjaya slew twenty-five thousand great charioteers. They had been sent by Duryodhana for the destruction of the Partha, but no sooner had they reached him than they went to their doom, like moths flying into a flame. Then the Matsyas and Kekayas, skilled in the science of the bow, surrounded the great charioteer Partha together with his son. At this very time, as the sun was setting, confusion arose among all the armies. Then your father Devavrata, seeing that the horses of the armies were weary, called for a withdrawal at the twilight hour, O great king. In this mutual clash between the Pandavas and the Kurus, both armies, greatly agitated, returned each to its own encampment. Then, having gone to their own camps, they settled there in due order, O Bharata — the Pandavas together with the Srinjayas, and the Kurus likewise."

The day ends not with a decisive victory but with exhaustion. Arjuna destroys a vast host, yet it is the weariness of the war-horses and the setting sun that force Bhishma to halt the fighting; both sides withdraw to their camps still troubled.
