संजय उवाच
अथ राजन् महाबाहुः सात्यकिर् युद्धदुर्मदः ॥
विकृष्य चापं समरे भारसाधनम् उत्तमम् ॥
प्रामुञ्चत् पुङ्खसंयुक्ताञ् शरान् आशीविषोपमान् ॥
प्रकाशं लघु चित्रं च दर्शयन्न् अस्त्रलाघवम् ॥
तस्य विक्षिपतश् चापं शरान् अन्यांश् च मुञ्चतः ॥
आददानस्य भूयश् च संदधानस्य चापरान् ॥
क्षिपतश् च शरान् अस्य रणे शत्रून् विनिघ्नतः ॥
ददृशे रूपम् अत्यर्थं मेघस्येव प्रवर्षतः ॥
तम् उदीर्यन्तम् आलोक्य राजा दुर्योधनस् ततः ॥
रथानाम् अयुतं तस्य प्रेषयाम् आस भारत ॥
तांस् तु सर्वान् महेष्वासान् सात्यकिः सत्यविक्रमः ॥
जघान परमेष्वासो दिव्येनास्त्रेण वीर्यवान् ॥
स कृत्वा दारुणं कर्म प्रगृहीतशरासनः ॥
आससाद ततो वीरो भूरिश्रवसम् आहवे ॥
स हि संदृश्य सेनां तां युयुधानेन पातिताम् ॥
अभ्यधावत संक्रुद्धः कुरूणां कीर्तिवर्धनः ॥
इन्द्रायुधसवर्णं तत् स विस्फार्य महद् धनुः ॥
व्यसृजद् वज्रसंकाशाञ् शरान् आशीविषोपमान् ॥
सहस्रशो महाराज दर्शयन् पाणिलाघवम् ॥
शरांस् तान् मृत्युसंस्पर्शान् सात्यकेस् तु पदानुगाः ॥
न विषेहुस् तदा राजन् दुद्रुवुस् ते समन्ततः ॥
विहाय समरे राजन् सात्यकिं युद्धदुर्मदम् ॥

tasya vikṣipataś cāpaṃ śarān anyāṃś ca muñcataḥ ||
ādadānasya bhūyaś ca saṃdadhānasya cāparān ||
kṣipataś ca śarān asya raṇe śatrūn vinighnataḥ ||
dadṛśe rūpam atyarthaṃ meghasyeva pravarṣataḥ ||
tam udīryantam ālokya rājā duryodhanas tataḥ ||
rathānām ayutaṃ tasya preṣayām āsa bhārata ||
tāṃs tu sarvān maheṣvāsān sātyakiḥ satyavikramaḥ ||
jaghāna parameṣvāso divyenāstreṇa vīryavān ||
sa kṛtvā dāruṇaṃ karma pragṛhītaśarāsanaḥ ||
āsasāda tato vīro bhūriśravasam āhave ||
sa hi saṃdṛśya senāṃ tāṃ yuyudhānena pātitām ||
abhyadhāvata saṃkruddhaḥ kurūṇāṃ kīrtivardhanaḥ ||
indrāyudhasavarṇaṃ tat sa visphārya mahad dhanuḥ ||
vyasṛjad vajrasaṃkāśāñ śarān āśīviṣopamān ||
sahasraśo mahārāja darśayan pāṇilāghavam ||
śarāṃs tān mṛtyusaṃsparśān sātyakes tu padānugāḥ ||
na viṣehus tadā rājan dudruvus te samantataḥ ||
vihāya samare rājan sātyakiṃ yuddhadurmadam ||
Sanjaya said: "Then, O king, the mighty-armed Satyaki, unconquerable in battle, drew his excellent, mighty bow in the fight and loosed feathered arrows resembling venomous serpents, showing brilliantly, swiftly, and skillfully the lightness of his mastery over weapons. As he swung his bow, released one arrow after another, took up and fitted others to the string, hurled them and struck down enemies in battle, his form appeared extraordinary, like that of a rain-cloud pouring down. Seeing this mounting onslaught, king Duryodhana sent ten thousand chariots against him, O Bharata. But the valiant Satyaki, a supreme archer of true valor, slew all those great bowmen with a divine astra. Having accomplished this terrible feat, and with his bow still raised, the hero then approached Bhurishravas in battle. And Bhurishravas, seeing the army felled by Yuyudhana, grew enraged and charged upon him, augmenting the glory of the Kurus. Stretching his great bow, the color of Indra's rainbow, he loosed thousands of thunderbolt-like arrows resembling venomous serpents, displaying the lightness of his hand. Satyaki's foot-followers could not then endure those death-bearing arrows, O king, and fled in every direction, abandoning the unconquerable Satyaki in the fight."

Satyaki is shown here as a disciple of the same school of martial skill as Arjuna: speed, precision, an unbroken stream of arrows. But Bhurishravas now steps forward to meet him, and the battle at once turns personal, for no ordinary army can withstand men of this stature.
