When the sun had all but set, they still waged a most terrible battle; charioteers and horsemen fell scattered by the thousands. Then the enraged son of Shantanu, Bhishma, with arrows of smooth joints began to destroy the army of those great-souled warriors, sending the troops of the Panchalas with his arrows to the abode of Yama. Thus this great archer broke through the battle-line of the Pandavas and, having called off the troops, withdrew to his own camp, O king. Dharmaraja, seeing Dhrishtadyumna and Vrikodara, kissed them upon the head and, filled with joy, went to his camp.

The day ends not in triumphant joy but in the withdrawal of troops after a vast slaughter. Yudhishthira's gesture toward Bhima and Dhrishtadyumna restores human warmth to a world where, as evening falls, what mainly grows is the kingdom of death.
