Then King Duryodhana, surrounded by his own brothers, guarded Bhishma in the battle while the slaughter of men went on. But Bhima, having slain the charioteer of Bhishma, best of charioteers, while that chariot with its bolting horses careered in every direction, swiftly cut off the head of Sunabha with an arrow, O slayer of foes. Struck down by the very sharp kshurapra, he fell to the ground. When this maharatha son of yours had been slain, great king, his seven heroic own brothers could not bear it in the fight: Adityaketu, Bahvashi, Kundadhara, Mahodara, Aparajita, Panditaka, Vishalaksha, and Sudurjaya. Clad in gaily arrayed armor, with varied mail and banners, these crushers of foes, eager for battle, rushed at the Pandava in the fight. Mahodara pierced Bhima with nine feathered arrows like thunderbolts, as Vritrahan once struck Namuchi. Adityaketu struck him with seventy arrows, Bahvashi with five, Kundadhara with ninety, Vishalaksha with seven; Aparajita, the ever-victorious maharatha, showered mighty Bhimasena with a multitude of arrows, while Panditaka overwhelmed him with three. Bhima could not bear the blows of his foes in battle. Gripping his bow with his left hand, this tormentor of enemies severed with an arrow of curved joints the head of fair-faced Aparajita, your son; conquered by Bhima, it fell to the ground. Then with another bhalla, before the eyes of the whole world, he sent the maharatha Kundadhara to the realm of death. After that, immeasurable in spirit, Bhima nocked an arrow and let it fly at Panditaka, O Bharata. That arrow slew Panditaka and plunged into the earth, like a serpent driven by Time that has swiftly struck down a man. Then, remembering an old grievance, undaunted Bhima severed Vishalaksha's head with three arrows and cast it to the ground. Mahodara, the great archer, was pierced by him in the chest with a naracha and, struck down, fell to the ground, O king. In the fight Bhima cut down Adityaketu's banner with an arrow, and then with a very sharp bhalla severed his head. After that, enraged, Bhima sent Bahvashi to the abode of Yama with an arrow of curved joints.'

What is fulfilled here is not mere martial fury in Bhima, but the memory of an inflicted humiliation. The old wrong done in the assembly returns upon the house of Dhritarashtra as an unrelenting consequence, and the names of the sons become a reckoning of debt.
