These horses, meeting your swift troops, struck chest against chest and muzzle against muzzle, and suddenly fell to the ground, struck down by the powerful onrush. As the troops of horses fell upon one another, a dreadful sound was heard, as if Garuda himself were falling. Likewise, great king, the riders, having clashed with one another on the field, wrought a terrible mutual slaughter. While this great, tumultuous confusion continued, the troops of horses on both sides were destroyed on every side. The heroes, their arrows spent, their horses slain, worn out with fatigue, came to ruin, hacking at one another. When the cavalry was exhausted and only a small remnant remained, O Bharata, the heroic sons of Subala advanced to the front of the battle. Mounted on the finest mature, well-trained horses, matching the wind in gait and speed, Gaja, Gavaksha, Vrishaka, Charmavan, Arjava and Shuka — these six, endowed with strength, went forth from the great army. Though Shakuni and their own mighty warriors tried to hold them back, they, armored, skilled in war, fearsome in aspect and of great strength, broke through this nearly unconquerable formation, striving for victory and for heaven. Then these Gandharas, frenzied in battle, burst in joyfully. Seeing that they had broken through, the valiant Iravan spoke to his warriors, adorned and armed: "Arrange matters so that all these warriors of Dhritarashtra, together with their retinue and their mounts, are struck down in battle." Answering, "So be it," all of Iravan's warriors struck the enemy army, which was hard for its foes to overcome. Seeing their own formation shattered by the other, all the sons of Subala could not bear it and, rushing at Iravan, surrounded him on every side.

The cavalry scene reveals the cost of speed and beauty: wind-swift horses become bodies falling upon one another. Iravan acts as a commander, not merely a lone hero — seeing the breach, he at once gives his men a precise order.
