In that great battle, once again so dreadful, a vast and terrible confusion arose between the two armies. Horses, elephants, and foot-soldiers were mingled together; the infantry were trampled by elephants, while chariots and elephants there were struck down by foot-soldiers. Likewise, amid the crush of your men and theirs, O king, charioteers cut down streams of infantry and chariots, and many horses besides. Arjuna, not knowing that his own son had been slain, went on killing in battle the heroes of the king who guarded Bhishma. Your warriors too, O king, and the mighty Sriñjayas, giving up their lives in the fight, struck one another down. With hair undone, stripped of armor, deprived of chariots, their bows cut asunder, they closed together and fought with their bare arms. Mighty Bhishma, with arrows striking at vital points, slew the great chariot-warriors, shaking the army of the Pandavas in battle. Because of him, many men perished in the army of Yudhishthira — warriors mounted on elephants and horses, charioteers, and horses alike. There, O Bharata, beholding Bhishma's valor in battle, we saw something exceedingly wondrous, like the valor of Shakra. Likewise dreadful then was the battle of Bhimasena, of Parshata-Dhrishtadyumna, and of the archer Satvata. Beholding the prowess of Drona, fear entered the Pandavas: 'He alone is able in battle to slay us together with our troops; what then to say when he is surrounded by heroes of the earth and hosts of warriors?' So they spoke, great king, harassed by Drona in the fight. While that dreadful battle thus went on, O bull among the Bharatas, the heroes of both armies would not spare one another. Enraged, the archers of your side and of the Pandavas, dear one, fought like men possessed, mighty as if turned into rakshasas. In that demon-like battle, O lord of men, we saw not a single warrior who guarded his own life.

After Iravan's death, the narrative does not linger on private grief: Arjuna still does not know of his son's death, and the battle goes on devouring everyone. This underscores the harsh law of war — personal tragedy dissolves into the general torrent of destruction, as the warriors' consciousness turns almost demonic.
