译文

Sanjaya said: "Having heard that his son Iravan was slain, Dhananjaya, overcome with great sorrow and sighing like a serpent, said these words to Vasudeva in the battle: 'This, surely, the supremely wise Vidura foresaw long ago — this terrible destruction of the Kurus and Pandavas. Therefore, being great in understanding, he tried to restrain the lord of men, Dhritarashtra. Many heroes who did not deserve to be slain have been struck down by the Kauravas in battle, Madhusudana, and by us as well. For the sake of wealth, best of men, a despicable deed is being done. Shame on riches for whose sake such destruction of kinsmen is wrought! Better death without wealth than wealth gained by the slaying of kinsmen. What indeed shall we gain, Krishna, by killing the assembled kinsmen? Through the offense of Duryodhana, of Shakuni son of Subala, and through Karna's evil counsel, the kshatriyas are going to their death. Only now do I understand, Madhusudana, how rightly the king, mighty-armed, acted when he begged Suyodhana for half the kingdom, or even five villages; but that evil-minded one refused. Seeing brave kshatriyas lying on the ground, I bitterly reproach myself. Shame on the kshatriya way of life! These kshatriyas in battle will think me weak, but now war with my kinsmen is what I desire, Madhusudana. Quickly drive the horses toward the army of Dhritarashtra's son. With my two arms I shall cross this vast ocean of battle. Now, Madhava, is no time anywhere for faint-heartedness.' Thus addressed by Partha, Keshava, slayer of enemy heroes, urged on those white horses, swift as the wind. Then, O Bharata, a great roar arose from your army, like the roar of the ocean whipped up by the wind at the time of the tide."
