The kshatriyas there, seeing that great slaughter, cried out: 'Through Duryodhana's fault, the Kauravas are going to ruin. How could this wicked son of Dhritarashtra, lord of men, deluded by greed, come to hate the worthy sons of Pandu?' Such varied speech, full of praise for the Pandavas and dreadful for your sons, was heard there, O Bharata. Hearing then these words, spoken by all the warriors, your son Duryodhana, the offender against the whole world, addressed Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and Shalya, O Bharata: 'Fight without arrogance! Why do you delay?' After that a terrible slaughter broke out between the Kurus and the Pandavas, born of the game of dice, O king. Son of Vichitravirya, since you did not restrain it earlier, though great souls held you back, behold now such is its fruit. For neither the sons of Pandu with their armies and foot-following retinues, nor the Kauravas, lord of the people, spare their lives in battle. For this reason this terrible destruction of people has gone on — whether through fate, tiger among men, or through your own misrule, O king.'

Sanjaya directly links the battle to a moral cause: the slaughter is not accidental — it grew out of the dice game, envy, and Duryodhana's unrestrained will. Fate is named, but alongside it stands Dhritarashtra's own human responsibility.
