संजय उवाच
अर्जुनस् तु नरव्याघ्र सुशर्मप्रमुखान् नृपान् ॥
अनयत् प्रेतराजस्य भवनं सायकैः शितैः ॥
सुशर्मापि ततो बाणैः पार्थं विव्याध संयुगे ॥
वासुदेवं च सप्तत्या पार्थं च नवभिः पुनः ॥
तान् निवार्य शरौघेण शक्रसूनुर् महारथः ॥
सुशर्मणो रणे योधान् प्राहिणोद् यमसादनम् ॥
ते वध्यमानाः पार्थेन कालेनेव युगक्षये ॥
व्यद्रवन्त रणे राजन् भये जाते महारथाः ॥
उत्सृज्य तुरगान् के चिद् रथान् के चिच् च मारिष ॥
गजान् अन्ये समुत्सृज्य प्राद्रवन्त दिशो दश ॥
अपरे तुद्यमानास् तु वाजिनागरथा रणात् ॥
त्वरया परया युक्ताः प्राद्रवन्त विशां पते ॥
पादाताश् चापि शस्त्राणि समुत्सृज्य महारणे ॥
निरपेक्षा व्यधावन्त तेन तेन स्म भारत ॥
वार्यमाणाः स्म बहुशस् त्रैगर्तेन सुशर्मणा ॥
तथान्यैः पार्थिवश्रेष्ठैर् न व्यतिष्ठन्त संयुगे ॥

arjunas tu naravyāghra suśarmapramukhān nṛpān ||
anayat pretarājasya bhavanaṃ sāyakaiḥ śitaiḥ ||
suśarmāpi tato bāṇaiḥ pārthaṃ vivyādha saṃyuge ||
vāsudevaṃ ca saptatyā pārthaṃ ca navabhiḥ punaḥ ||
tān nivārya śaraugheṇa śakrasūnur mahārathaḥ ||
suśarmaṇo raṇe yodhān prāhiṇod yamasādanam ||
te vadhyamānāḥ pārthena kāleneva yugakṣaye ||
vyadravanta raṇe rājan bhaye jāte mahārathāḥ ||
utsṛjya turagān ke cid rathān ke cic ca māriṣa ||
gajān anye samutsṛjya prādravanta diśo daśa ||
apare tudyamānās tu vājināgarathā raṇāt ||
tvarayā parayā yuktāḥ prādravanta viśāṃ pate ||
pādātāś cāpi śastrāṇi samutsṛjya mahāraṇe ||
nirapekṣā vyadhāvanta tena tena sma bhārata ||
vāryamāṇāḥ sma bahuśas traigartena suśarmaṇā ||
tathānyaiḥ pārthivaśreṣṭhair na vyatiṣṭhanta saṃyuge ||
Sanjaya said: 'Arjuna, tiger among men, sent the kings led by Susharman to the abode of the king of the dead with sharp arrows. Susharman, in turn, wounded Partha with arrows in the battle, striking Vasudeva with seventy and Partha again with nine. But the son of Shakra, the great chariot-warrior, having checked them with a flood of arrows, sent the warriors of Susharman to the abode of Yama in the fight. Struck down by Partha as though by Kala at the end of the age, the great chariot-warriors, when fear arose, fled in the battle, O king. Some abandoned their horses, others their chariots, O worthy one, and others left their elephants and fled in all ten directions. The rest, harassed on the field by horses, elephants and chariots, rushed away in the utmost haste, O lord of the peoples. Even the foot soldiers, casting aside their weapons in the great battle, fled without looking back, each his own way, O Bharata. Though Susharman the Trigarta and the other foremost kings tried again and again to hold them, they could not stand their ground in the battle.'

Arjuna breaks not only the ranks of the Trigartas but their will to resist. Once fear enters an army, weapons, chariots and elephants cease to be support and become only a burden to be cast off.
