译文

As Bhishma fell from his chariot, a great cry of 'Ha! Ha!' rose in heaven among the gods and everywhere among the earthly kings. Seeing the noble grandsire fall, it was as though all our hearts fell together with Bhishma. The mighty-armed one fell, making the earth resound, like the fallen standard of Indra, the banner of all archers. Yet, upheld by masses of arrows, he did not even touch the ground. When this great archer, the bull among men, fell from his chariot and lay down upon a bed of arrows, a divine state came over him. Rain poured down, the earth trembled, and as he fell he saw that the sun was already sinking low. The hero regained consciousness and, reflecting on the hour, heard a divine voice from every side in the sky: 'How can the noble Gangeya, the best of all bearers of weapons, O tiger among men, give up his body now that dakshinayana has arrived?' Hearing this, Gangeya said, 'I remain.' Even fallen to the ground, Bhishma, grandsire of the Kurus, held his life-breaths, awaiting uttarayana. Learning his intention, Ganga, daughter of Himavat, sent great sages there in the form of swans. Then the swift hamsas, dwellers of Lake Manasa, hastened together to see Bhishma, grandsire of the Kurus, there where the best of men lay upon his bed of arrows. The sages in the form of swans, having reached Bhishma, saw him, the grandsire of the Kurus, lying upon the arrows. Seeing this great soul and circling him with their right side toward him, they noticed the sun on its southern course. Then the sages, turning to one another, said, 'Can Bhishma, great soul that he is, really die in dakshinayana?' Having said this, the hamsas set out toward the south. Seeing them and reflecting, Shantanava, of great wisdom, said to them: 'I will not depart in any way while the sun moves southward; this is fixed in my mind. I will go to my own place, which was mine of old, when the sun turns northward, O hamsas; I speak the truth to you. I will hold my life-breaths, awaiting uttarayana. I am master over my life-breaths and free in the timing of my departure; therefore I will hold my life, wishing to die during the northern course of the sun. And the boon that was given to me by my great-souled father - death at my own will - let that boon be fulfilled. Therefore I will hold my life-breaths until my departure is appointed.' Having said this to the hamsas, he remained lying upon the bed of arrows.
