निबध्यतां मे कवचं विचित्रं; हैमं शुभ्रं मणिरत्नावभासि ॥
शिरस्त्राणं चार्कसमानभासं; धनुः शरांश् चापि विषाहिकल्पान् ॥

«Let them bind on me the ornate golden armor, shining, gleaming with gems, and the helmet radiant as the sun; [bring] the bow and arrows like venomous serpents. Let them fit sixteen quivers and bring the divine [spare] bows, swords, spear-javelins, heavy maces, and the conch shining with gold. And this golden victorious elephant-caparison, and my victorious banner the color of the blue lotus, having wiped them with soft cloths, bring here, having bound to it an ornate garland entwined with netting.»

The description of golden armor and weapons is not mere ornament of the narrative: the warrior arms himself with care, as for a solemn rite, for to the kshatriya battle is both ritual and the place where duty is fulfilled. Telling is the word «victorious» (jaitra), repeated twice — of the caparison and of the banner: Karna surrounds his departure with signs of victory, seeking to hasten good fortune through ritual proclamation. But no gold and no «victorious» gear will turn aside an outcome already decided by the rightness or wrongness of the cause. The verse teaches that outward equipment and ceremonial splendor do not decide the battle; and that one who trusts in the gleam of armor and in auspicious signs, rather than in dharma, prepares a triumph that will not come to pass.
