The Kekayas, Bhimasena, the son of Subhadra [Abhimanyu] and Ghatotkacha, Yudhishthira, both twins, the Matsyas, the sons of Drupada, and also the exultant sons of Draupadi, Dhrishtaketu with Satyaki, the enraged Chekitana and Yuyutsu, the mighty chariot-warrior, and other kings, O king, followers of the Pandava [Yudhishthira], performed in abundance deeds befitting [their] lineage and valor.

The roll call of heroes united against Drona reveals the strength of an alliance bound not by fear but by truth: the Pandavas are followed of their own will, and each one "performs deeds befitting his lineage." Herein lies the difference from the Kaurava host, gathered by gain and duty of service: here men fight for their own righteous and kindred cause. Telling is the presence among them of Yuyutsu — a son of Dhritarashtra who crossed over to truth against the claim of kinship: dharma stands above blood. The verse teaches that a host united by righteousness is stronger than one gathered by force; that true valor shows itself at once in fidelity to lineage and to duty; and that even from the camp of unrighteousness a righteous heart crosses to where dharma is — for kinship in truth is stronger than kinship in flesh.
