And who there, not sparing their own flesh, stepped forth to meet death face to face — to meet Dhananjaya [Arjuna], the conqueror in battle even of superhuman beings? My warriors here cannot withstand the onslaught of the white-horsed [Arjuna] and the roar of Gandiva, sounding like a storm cloud in the season of rain. That chariot, whose charioteer is Vishvaksena [Krishna] and whose warrior is Dhananjaya [Arjuna], is unconquerable, I deem, even by gods and asuras.

Here, amid his questions, a recognition of truth breaks through — something the king had not wished to see before: 'that chariot is unconquerable even by gods and asuras.' And the cause is named at once: 'whose charioteer is Vishvaksena [Krishna].' It is not Arjuna's valor by itself but the presence of the Lord as charioteer that makes the chariot invincible. Thus one blind to truth glimpses it for a moment: the victory of the Pandavas lies not in their own strength but in the fact that the Supreme Himself is with them. The verse teaches that only what is protected by God is unconquerable; that the greatest warrior is invincible not by his own might but because the Lord holds the reins of his chariot; and that this recognition is the beginning of a true insight, to which grief leads even Dhritarashtra.
