धृष्टद्युम्नबलं तूर्णं व्यधमन् निशितैः शरैः ॥
स दिशः सर्वतो रुद्ध्वा संवृत्य खम् अजिह्मगैः ॥
पार्षतो यत्र तत्रैव ममृदे पाण्डुवाहिनीम् ॥
mohayitvā tataḥ sainyaṃ bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnabalaṃ tūrṇaṃ vyadhaman niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
sa diśaḥ sarvato ruddhvā saṃvṛtya kham ajihmagaiḥ ||
pārṣato yatra tatraiva mamṛde pāṇḍuvāhinīm ||
Then, having thrown the army into confusion, the mighty son of Bharadvaja [Drona] swiftly scattered the army of Dhrishtadyumna with sharp arrows. Having blocked all the quarters and covered the sky with straight-flying arrows, wherever the Parshata [Dhrishtadyumna] was, precisely there he ground down the army of the Pandavas.

Drona rushes precisely to where Dhrishtadyumna is: the striker seeks out the one born to strike him down, not knowing that he himself hastens to meet his own fate. Thus the pursuer and the destined instrument of his end are drawn toward each other, and Drona's very fury against Dhrishtadyumna hastens their appointed meeting. The verse teaches that in the heat of triumph a man rushes toward that which will cause his own fall; that enmity toward the instrument of one's fate only speeds its fulfillment; and that overwhelming supremacy in one hour of battle does not annul, but sometimes hastens, the appointed end — for Drona rushes toward the very one by whose hand he is destined to fall.
