व्यथयेयुर् इमे सेनां देवानाम् अपि संयुगे ॥
आहवे ये न्यवर्तन्त वृकोदरमुखा रथाः ॥
संप्रयुक्तः किलैवायं दिष्टैर् भवति पूरुषः ॥
तस्मिन्न् एव तु सर्वार्था दृश्यन्ते वै पृथग्विधाः ॥

These chariot warriors, who turned to meet [the foe] with Vrikodara at their head, would strike with dread even the host of the gods in battle. For man is yoked to fate; and in it, indeed, are discerned all outcomes of every kind.

From admiration of the enemy host, Dhritarashtra turns at once to thoughts of fate: man is "yoked to what is decreed," and in that yoking lie all possible outcomes. Thus begins the blind king's long meditation on destiny and will. Coming from one who indulged his son's wickedness, this reflection on fate sounds both as insight and as self-justification. It is telling that the truth of fate's power over man is spoken by one who would gladly lay his own guilt upon it. The verse teaches that man indeed receives much not by his own will, being woven into a larger order; yet that the thought of fate becomes a lie when it is used to cover one's free choice; and that wisdom discerns where the power of the decreed extends, and where man's own responsibility begins.
