द्रोणस्य मिषतो व्यूहं भित्त्वा प्राविशद् आर्जुनिः ॥
तं प्रविष्टं परान् घ्नन्तं शत्रुमध्ये महाबलम् ॥
हस्त्यश्वरथपत्त्यौघाः परिवव्रुर् उदायुधाः ॥

saṃgrāmas tumulo rājan prāvartata sudāruṇaḥ ||
pravartamāne saṃgrāme tasminn atibhayaṃkare ||
droṇasya miṣato vyūhaṃ bhittvā prāviśad ārjuniḥ ||
taṃ praviṣṭaṃ parān ghnantaṃ śatrumadhye mahābalam ||
hastyaśvarathapattyaughāḥ parivavrur udāyudhāḥ ||
As the warriors fought, striking one another, a deafening battle, O king, most fierce, broke out. While that battle, inspiring great terror, was going on, before the eyes of Drona, the son of Arjuna broke through the formation and burst in. Him, who had burst in, striking the foes amidst the enemy, mighty as he was, streams of elephants, horses, chariots, and foot-soldiers encircled with weapons raised.

The youth breaks through the formation 'before the eyes of Drona' — the very architect of the impenetrable array: a child accomplishes the impossible where thousands had failed. This is the summit of his feat and the beginning of his ruin: having burst in, he is at once surrounded on every side. It is telling that the tradition emphasizes Drona's helplessness to stop him — the skill of the young man, for a moment, surpasses that of the teacher. The verse teaches that there are moments when youthful valor puts even the greatest to shame, achieving what they could not; that a single breakthrough immortalizes a name; but also that, having burst in alone where many did not enter, the youth found himself cut off from his own — and the brilliant breakthrough turned into a trap, for he managed to enter, but, as he himself had foretold, was not granted to leave.
